There was a brief moment near the end where I was really into it. But this wasn’t a storyline I could get into. I can’t blame audio because I enjoyed their voice acting.
I have SO MANY GRIPES ABOUT THIS BOOK. The only good thing was the beautiful state of CO, and maybe the last 50 pages which is why I didn’t give it one star. Way too long. Aurora is not funny, has a weird joke obsession over pee and diarrhea, often with the scenes involving Amos? (Skip to last paragraph for short review…)
Was I reading A VERY BAD YA??? How could aurora know so much and so little? oh you’re a rally car driver but you can’t snowboard? you can hike but then you can’t? she can pick up an eagle but screams and cries and runs from
a mouse??? Yes I know two things can be true at once but not as aurora, it’s not my fault blame the author she wrote her like that. And she goes on a date with the guy her BEST FRIEND had a crush on? Just strange behavior, maybe because her mental maturity was stunted for 14 years, as a pretend assistant to her famous boyfriend? Who knows I learned nothing about her until page 499, we knew her mom was gone but it took forever to find out why. I was not intrigued I was annoyed.
Yes, Rhodes was attractive (because of my OWN IMAGINATION) but he was NON VERBAL for 500 pages. Grumpy men do more than just grunt and be described as growling or gruffly (grunt was used THIRTY EIGHT TIMES). I would’ve rather read from his perspective as well as hers.
A slow burn slowly builds, I want to make sure people understand that. Def NOT a slow burn, comatose burn more like. It was like a haters to lovers, maybe? Idk they didn’t kiss until I swear again page 500 (plz see notes of how he didn’t speak for a year). wtf was the dick in her hand scene and she decides to talk about being jealous of women he barely even dated in the past? Hanging on because I was hopeful for a good sex scene and then getting whatever that sex scene was, IS WILD.
Lastly why all the MF mystery, this isn’t a thriller by any means?! It was just dragging a chaotic fruitless story line, that was hardly fun. I swear it’s like the author ran out of time and just threw everything into the last 100 pages. The epilogue was all over the place. So many grammatical errors.
Final note - Not for me, and I wouldn’t even recommend this to anyone. Which says a lot because I normally think there’s a book for everyone. Moody reader here, but my mood will never sway this way again. This was a #hillzshelf read which is a bummer but glad I stuck it out.

I have so many quotes & notes. Do you have a great imagination & like YA? Read it. If you have trouble with old century terms, or require a ton of back story or story building this isn’t for you. Bone dog was dope & I literally could see the tooth dancing out of her mouth. #hillzshelf has yet to disappoint me this year
Girls go missing all the time, and the story unfortunately is rarely a good ending. Interesting format, if you like true crime podcasts you’ll enjoy this book. But don’t get mad at me about the ending mmmkay? Gracias

#hillzshelf book club read for June (oh I’m SOOOOOOO sorry it’s 5 days into July 🙄). Any who, James Baldwin holy Hella you can write a novel.
The vocabulary, oh. my. goodness. Just beautifully written. This was perfection for Pride month (again June), it made me emotional. I have never written down as much as I did with such a fairly short novel. Too bad it’s a library borrow (that is overdue btw) or else it’d be highlighted up right nice. This book is a heavy emotional hitter, it makes you think of dark things your mind never really wants to go to. I am an absolute fan & this is not for everyone, but should be appreciated for even existing. Just beautiful, did I say that already? I even laughed at some v dark moments like the lose his head joke? Come onnnnn 🫠
PS
I listen to music when I read, often influenced by the novel. Since I knew the novel was set in France & was written in 1956, I played a vintage French playlist & when I tell you I felt like I was living in the book 😍
Oh and it’s very sad don’t get me wrong, very, very sad but sad things can still be really beautiful.

3.5, v unrealistic but so cute & funny you couldn't even care
Wow, just wow. Robbery, kidnapping, extortion, think Heartbreakers (the movie with Sigourney Weaver & Jennifer Love Hewitt) but take away romantic comedy and cross it with the Sopranos. Oh and it’s from a bisexual teenager’s perspective, loved every minute of it!
