Suspenseful! The writing was creative & so was the concept. Think of the movie escape room but with a supernatural demon type of twist. They all think they’re signing up for a game with a prize, but they really have no clue what’s in store for them. V wild ride but the three stars is because I couldn’t keep up with the characters and when it’d switch to the family running the game the writing was difficult for me to understand.

A bit all over the place. Regardless, I understood his message, appreciated his story and enjoyed the life lessons. A good read for hip hop lovers and fans of Wu Tang.

TW: tons of violence surrounding this time period & specifically on the topic of slavery. Very difficult to read those parts at times.

The author’s note stated the major events, principle characters and historical events are completely authentic. That truly got me. Getting to know Minette, growing with her, feeling her love, pain & anger, was deeply felt on my end. I knew nothing of Haiti, nor this time period so being able to learn so much was a nice surprise for me. I picked this up from Albertine on a trip to NYC & am very happy I did!

3.5 stars, I put a lot together prior to the ultimate unveiling of pivotal events and how they transpired. Bummed that I did because then it felt dragged out a bit. John Green sure knows how to write a sad & traumatic love story.

Wow what a messy tangled web these suburbanites weave! Multiple times I told Carmine aloud to shut tf up with her nosey ass she should've listened to me. I def had my guesses and I was pretty close, super quick read. The ending could've given me a little more and I wish it had so I could've given it 5!
