Natives: Race and Class in the Ruins of Empire by Akala
5.0
Really enjoyed this accessible, personal exploration of the many contradictions of racialised capitalism. Some minor disagreements perhaps (I don't agree that China lifted 800 million out of poverty without the use of colonialism or imperialism - one belt, one road has put many already over exploited countries into further unpayable debt in order to secure access to key infrastructure, docks etc) but all in all a book I would share with many of the teens I work with whose own experiences could have been lifted from these pages.
The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale
4.0
It’s likely that having first read Geo Maher’s A World Without Police that I found this to be a very insightful context primer surrounding the problems of policing but perhaps a little underwhelming. Particularly I found the chapter on Gangs very helpful. It’s a pragmatic and grounded book and I definitely recommend it but if you want very clear examples of how strong communities make police irrelevant go straight to AWWP.
