The echoes is a dark but moving novel that is as much about how one comes to heal and grow as it is about learning of the impacts of generational trauma.
I went into it thinking it was mainly going to be about the character Max, a ghost watching over his girlfriend in their apartment as she grieves for him. A love story, perhaps with some secrets to be revealed. However, it was more, I never anticipated the secrets that eventuated.
It really made me question how well do we really know the people we claim to love and how terribly sad that we may never know the full extent of one's truth.
There were so many questions and thoughts that ran through my head. This book definately made me reflect on whether I or we need to be more present and thoughtful in our day to day interactions with the people we love, or really just with everyone in general.
Be prepared to read about the stolen generation, child abuse, incest, drug and alcohol abuse, panic disorder, self harm and grief and loss. It's a lot, but it was honestly beautifully and thoughtfully written. Well worth the read.

Oh my goodness.
A very unwell man.
A very unlikable man.
Every psychiatrist' nightmare or dream. A great novel, one that you will always remember.
