Wild Place by Christian White
3.75
A solid 3.75 rating.
I really loved 'The Wife and the Widow' and 'The Nowhere Child', and although I can't say the exact same for 'Wild place', I still enjoyed it. It was quick, entertaining, and I loved that it was set in the 80's. Working out who was involved in the murder wasn't much of a surprise. As the novel drew closer to the end it was quite predictable. However, It was just the read I needed and I still found it very enjoyable. Christian White's novels are easy to read. He has a way of drawing you in and keeping you up late at night turning the pages. I would always recommend his novels to those interested in this genre.

The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay
3.5
I didn't know much about what the virgin cure was until reading this.
Based in the late 1800's we get to know Moth. A young girl raised in one of the poorest parts of New York by a gypsy, alcoholic mother who sells her off to be a maid at 12 years of age.
Moth's experience as a maid is nothing short of unpleasant as she is subjected to cruelty and physical abuse on a daily basis. There is a moment of hope when she finally escapes. However, her freedom is short lived, and she finds herself homeless, cold and hungry on the streets.
It's here that she is lured into a high end brothel. Where young, virgin girls are trained to be "whores" for the wealthy, elite men. At the time it was sadly and disturbingly believed that laying with a young virgin girl would cure men from syphilis. ( 🙄 just another excuse/ attempt to justify the sick, unjustifiable actions of humans). I say humans, because I also personally hold the lady of the house, luring the girls in, to then make money from them, just as accountable, and horrid as the wealthy men paying for them.
By the end of the novel we see how Moth's life unfolds and what the future holds for her. It was this wanting to know how it all ends up for her that kept me reading. Although I found this to be an interesting and informative read, I didn't particularly love it. The ending also seemed a bit rushed and abrupt for my liking.

Anna O by Matthew Blake
4.0
Given I'm fascinated with how the mind works, this was a logical buy for me.
Anna O is found asleep in a cabin with a bloodied knife in her hand and her two best friends are dead. She stays asleep for 4 years until Ben, (psychologist specialising in sleep disorders) is able to rouse her from her sleep and back to a conscious state.
The question remains, was Anna O conscious or sleep walking when the murders took place and if it's the latter, can she be trialled for murder?
As the story unfolds we come to realise nothing is what it appears to be.
I enjoyed the concept of this book, it was different and intriguing. My only criticism was that it was 50-100 pages too long. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers, I'd give it a go.

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
5.0
I enjoy reading historical fiction and 'The Frozen River' didn't disappoint. It's inspired by journal entries of a midwife, Martha Ballard and her involvement in solving a murder in the late 1700s. A murder that shocks the small town and causes many whispers amongst the locals.
I fell in awe with Martha and her husband Ephraim. Their bond, their devotion, well their love is just the pure and rare kind. My kind of romance. If you enjoy historical fiction, murder mystery, and a love/ romance like Martha's and Ephraim's, this one is for you.
