this was wild, when from really being into it then losing that love then finishing in tears
it's biggest flaw is how it seems like  kuang reeeeally wants you to *get* the themes and the conflict surrounding colonialism and it just ends up feeling like the narrator is holding my head and screaming NOW SEE THIS IS WHY X PLOT POINT HAPPENED ITS ALL TIED. I think the author develops said themes pretty well through the characters and plot, so it just feels like she thought the audience wouldn't get it
BUT
man it was a great experience. I haven't felt this invested in a book in a while. the concept is marvelous and how it ties colonialism, imperialism and how important language is is incredible. idk how I didn't see the end coming but i gasped ngl

my rating of the stories:
1.no hay nadie allá afuera
2. pelando a rocío
3. amor sobre ruedas
4. los muertos vivos
5. deambulando por la orilla oscura

escogí el libro sin saber que era una colección de cuentos cortos, which is something i just cant get into as easily. the first story was not my thing but it was short enough for me to power thru and tbh im happy i did. the last one particularly was sooo good an it felt so self-contained and complete.

this book is so good but the ending is so bad. i get what youre trying to do mr harris but it felt very much "its 10 mins to the end of this episode and the writers just introduced a big situation that will not be solved in a satisfactory way". STILL  a four stars bc i love will graham my best friend will graham
