I have always been morbidly fascinated with government experimentation. This book plunged me right back into that interest. An excellent book. The ending while dissatisfying was 100% appropriate and perfect. I strongly recommend it.
4.5/5
I love found family. It is my favorite trope. This novel is the perfect representation of found family. It is a story that makes everything feel warm as you read it. A beautiful blend of magic and “reality.” I want more.
I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about it and I really enjoyed it. I do feel that some of the world building was a little thin. I loved the description of the berserker state. I’m definitely reading book two.
EDIT: The more I think about this book the more I get frustrated. I realized that I did not just want more of Addie’s life, I wanted more from her life. She lived through hundreds of years and basically stayed entirely in Europe? The languages she learned were almost all European. You’re telling me a woman with wanderlust wouldn’t want to go to any Asian countries? Or explore the Middle East? Any African countries? Her life seemed weirdly limited given how boundless her life should have been. I dropped my rating from 4.5 to 2
My first read this year was great. It was a fantastic revenge story masquerading as a wonderful love story and vice versa. I loved the characters. I did want more stories of Addie’s life, I loved reading her history.

As a kid I was an avid fan of the fantasy genre. I loved being whisked away to new worlds with new rules. However as I picked up and read more and more Fantasy novels I felt like I was stuck in a rut. It started to feel like the same world over and over again with a few details tweaked. The setting always felt in some way like feudalistic Europe, it grew quickly tiresome. Reading "Grace of Kings" was like a breath of fresh air. The setting is very reminiscent of Ancient China, and it's incredible. And the technology is completely new. He's created a "silkpunk" world. I highly recommend that anyone who loves fantasy novels should read this book. It will leave you wanting more.
