It certainly went in a direction I was not expecting, and I think fans of noir or neo-noir would very much enjoy it. My only real complaint is that the book wasn’t longer. It feels a bit like it could have been fleshed out more, but also, I would have loved to just read more about the characters, backstory, and lore.
It took a bit of a long time for me to read because I knew it would be over too quickly. I’m definitely hoping to read more from this author in the future.

I’m going to be completely honest, I’m pretty sure I read this for school 12+ years ago, and I remember almost nothing about it other than it had a profound effect on my gender.

One of my all time favorite books! I believe I’ve read it 4 or 5 times now, and plan to again.

All of the fantasy and adventure expected of Tolkien, but less dense than his other works.

(I may have read above my grade level as a kid because I loved reading so much, BUT) this still feels like a book to introduce a teen, or possibly an older child, to high fantasy. It’s a classic.

An important read for people (cishet women in particular as that’s the experience of the author) recovering from religious trauma. It explains why those feelings and experiences are valid.

Quite dark, quite sad, masterfully written.

I always say mind the tags, that is to say, be aware of what you’re getting into, but read it anyway if you can.
