*Spoiler Alert*
This was a good book until the end. Emma was, to me, the typical white woman blaming everyone else instead of taking ownership for being a horrible friend to Zadie. Tons of people grow up poor, in abusive families, etc they do not latch on and sleep continuously with their best friends man while being in a relationship with Graham, a man who loved her.
That being said, any book that can garner such anger, sadness and good feels from me is definitely worth a read.
I appreciate the medical knowledge to explain what was happening with the characters however some sections I felt could have been left out of the novel. The character development was good and I loved how she flash from the present to 1999 and from Emma to Zadie.

It would make a great Covid or Summer Beach Read.

I know this book was written during the Harlem
Renaissance and social mores’ were different however Irenes lack of a voice infuriated me! Claire was the typical quintessential tragic mulatto, caught between wanting to be white slowly realizing she was also black and longed for that connection also. The ending is the only reason I didn’t give it five stars. I wanted some sort of ending. This, to me, was a cliffhanger. The writing was excellent! Great book overall.
