I finished this in 24 hours and it only took that long because I had too sleep/eat at some point. The pace was medium to fast seeing as from Chapter one I was obsessed and knew that this book would be gut wrenching and emotional but in a necessary way. This book highlights the way that often times people of color's disappearances go unnoticed and under investigated. This one drew me in and has been sitting with me ever since. The writing was beautiful and the characters were hard not too root for. I will definitely be reading more of S.A. Cosby's books.

This was a very dark, mysterious, fantasy. But the YA aspect of it keeps it from being "too dark" without taking away from the erie feeling the story elicits. I really appreciated the insider view of the MMC's anxiety. I found a lot of the feelings highlighted (feeling like a burden to others, and overthinking as a result of others reactions to anxiety) were handled and presented to the audience in a very respectful and insightful manner. I also found that the inside pov of the MMC's sexuality was eye opening and unlike other LGBTQIA+ books or characters I have read before. The writing was beautiful with lines that seem to jump off the page at you. I was sort of able to guess the plot twist but the following plot twists had me gagged. The only part of the book I did not enjoy was the end. I felt that the ending was a lacking something, However, I do want to make it clear that it does not take away from the book; the ending was just not my cup of tea.

From the very first chapter I already knew this would be a five star read. I loved the magic system in this book. It's is unlike any other magic system I have ever seen. I found myself enthralled by the characters and their seperate backstories. Kel and Liala's banter was also top tier. The volley of witty lines between these two had me laughing out loud. The writing was also full of such beautiful lines and tidbits of wisdom that, in my opinion, correlate to the real world. This was a fantastic start to my V.E. Schwab journey. I will definitely be continuing the series and hopefully reading the rest of their books.

I might be overly emotional, or maybe Miss Schwab just has a talent for making me cry.
I really enjoy a good sarcastic character, and I've found them frequently in V.E. Schwab's books. Her characters always have a hint of mischief, which makes my heart sing. The theme of found family brought me to tears more than once, and there are so many beautifully written lines in her work. Overall, I was captivated by every word and couldn’t help but root for the characters.

This was a cute and festive read (which is exactly what I wanted in a holiday Romance). It was not anything mind altering but it was a fun read none the less. I found myself laughing little too certain scenes. I did get to buddy read this and it made the book more fun because we got to bounce theories off of each other.

In my opinion this book is such an important read. The way this book handles DV is so respectful and the inside/outside POV between Iris or August approached this topic from a fresh perspective.
The parts of the book which stood out the most for me were:
- • when Iris called "hopscotch"
- • what Mimi says to Iris during the cleanse
- • Iris finally getting to tell her mom / aunt off
- • The relationship between lo and Iris
- • The time, space, and consistency August gives Iris while she heals even though he didn't not know exactly what she had gone through
