Fun little novel with an approach to music that didn’t immediately irreparably piss me off which is most novels that surround music. The love story was a bit depressing but realistic and I felt the characters dependency on one another. I did have a sort of paradigm of comparing it with visit from the goon squad which was a less compelling story that was written in a more interesting way- and the lack of interesting literary aspects maybe bumps down the effect of the novel a bit for me.

One of the better Emily Henry books imo albeit the romance aspects never really clicked for me but I don’t think she’s the strongest in that regard, honestly the frame story was lackluster but the Margaret saga was pretty interesting and compelling! A fun beach read !

This novel so beautifully and perfectly captured the illness of American Puritanism in the south and the effects it can have those in the holds of repression. I loved McCullers’ voice and found the strange narrative aspects incredibly interesting. The characters are all in perfect revolving animosity with one another and watching the suspense unfold was fantastic.

I hope the author sought to create a truly maladaptive emotionally unstable wreck of a protagonist who was given a hard dose of reality.. but I still wonder if some of the riffing didn’t approach too much a level of unobservant first wave feminism to make me think the author was truly out of touch with reality as well.. the levels of abhorrent racism and homophobia in this book far exceed the “not-pc” label I see attached to it regularly… this one is unpleasant and vile in a way that has nothing to do with a way that it regards the intricacies and complexity surrounding sexuality. A difficult and unenjoyable read, albeit with some good lines and creativity. This entire premise is ultimately accomplished far more successfully in my year of rest and relaxation so I feel it can be skipped.

Really interesting character study- I’m left wondering if I was supposed to find the main character likable. Her weakness and over involvement in her friends life was potentially annoying unless it culminates in the sapphic undertones I think I might be picking up . I’ll be reading the next one, at least and I felt like the translation was quite nice.

Difficult to face at times, important to recognize albeit the religious aspect doesn’t always resonate.

Poignant but sort of devolved in the end, the thematic through line wasn’t as powerful as the specific events. Honestly as much as I was drawn to parts I was put off by the overly sentimental style, overly saccharine in its reflection it felt like slam-poetry at times.

A family’s attempt to confront their history of addiction and the damage it’s done to their relationships, it was at times a difficult book but I really blew through it. The quality of writing was nothing special but the symbolism was strong throughout, the plot carried and came to conclusion in a somewhat expected way.
