The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

I don't normally read literary fiction but this one was definitely worth it.

Brit Bennett's writing was out of this world, it got me hooked since the first page.

I loved how we saw the two generations grow apart from each other and how they converge. How the family drama went through the years.
How we've read each person's individual ups and downs, struggles and success. We've seen how they really thought of each other and how they felt about their own actions. The book didn't leave any character out and it gave each one its own spotlight which i admired.

I will definitely pick other books by Brit Bennett. Definitely recommending this book to literally anyone.

This just wasn’t for me.
The comparison to gossip girl and get out is what made me read this book. I was a big fan of gossip girl when i was a teenager so this seemed interesting.

But i was disappointed.

This book has such a thrilling premise. It deals with racism and inequality in schools. It had a lot of potential and i loved the message it was delivering.

The writing felt flat to me. The first 50% felt super slow and i just couldn’t connect with any of the characters. It felt too YA for me then i realized that this one was marketed as mystery/Thriller. The plot was so predictable and it didn’t shock me or anything. I kept thinking of dnf-ing it.

I think the message in this book is so powerful but the execution was poor.

This was a fun ride. That’s all.
Sometimes i just pick an audiobook just to entertain me while doing home chores. And this one did just that.

The writing is engaging with short chapters that keep you listening. The narrators were pretty good.

The characters felt flat to me but i wasn’t looking for anything special, i was just there for the plot tbh.

But the ending was so expected and it felt rushed.

I think i enjoyed this book just because i was listening to it while doing lots of things and not 100% focused on everything.

Nope. I did not enjoy this one.

Not the writing. Not the characters. Not the plot. Nothing.

What makes a good thriller?
Is it the plot twist at the last chapter? Or is it the whole journey and the suspense that you go through while reading the book?

Old me would probably say the plot twist. If i didn’t guess the ending then it’s a good thriller.
But now i actually want more than that.

This had neither.

The Writing was so boring to me. I hated all the characters and didn’t give a damn about all of them.
It wasn’t creepy and i just wanted it to end.

The plot twist at the end didn’t blow my mind because i was so bored and didn’t care anymore about where this book was going.

I finished it three days ago and i already forgot 75% of the book.

Maybe it’s me? Probably not.

Dnf-ing this book at 67% because i just don't get the point of this book.
The pacing is so boring, the characters are so flat it seems like a waste of time.
I listened to the audiobook and i found myself just dozing off so no. Just no.

3.5 stars.

I had zero expectations going into this but damn that was creepy.
I enjoyed the format it was written in.
It's a novella full of manipulation. It's creepy and i think it did its job well.
