I read this book for the first time when I was around 13, so I decided to reread it with whatever adult perspective I have now.

I think you just have to read it. Don’t listen to reviews or what other people say about it. Just read it and see how it makes you feel.

I love Poe, and I have multiple collections of his writing — so I was excited to read a reimagining of The Fall of the House of Usher.

The imagery and descriptions were amazing. Not to mention, the cover is absolutely beautiful. But, everything else fell sort of flat.

The narrator was a bit pretentious and annoying to read at times. The other characters felt almost hallow. And the creation of a fictitious country, whose military history was jammed in at odd places, felt out of place.

I think the narrator having a separate set of pronouns, and no explicit gender, could have worked, but the way it was done felt like it belonged in a different book. It was very unnecessary to the story.

It was a decent book that had its faults, but personally, I prefer the original.

I absolutely loved this book.

I was hooked and constantly on the edge of my seat throughout the entire read. The characters were written so amazingly, and so easy to love and grow attached to.

I loved reading about each of the different regions. Seeing how they all viewed the events, and each other, so differently was so interesting.

My jaw dropped multiple times throughout the book, and I couldn’t put it down. There were some parts that were so shocking, and so amazingly well written.

I grew so attached to the characters, their growth, and their relationships while reading the book. I’m excited to read Priory of the Orange Tree, but so sad to leave these characters behind.

I wanted to love this book. When I first read the premise, I was excited to start the book and see where it went. And I was mildly disappointed.

The writing could be quite repetitive, and a bit jumpy. I had to go back and reread multiple chapters because actions or characters seemed to be coming out of nowhere, or at a pace that made little sense.

Another thing that bothered me was the introduction of other animals. While it would make sense that other animals were also a part of the Event, it didn’t make sense that humans would treat them any different to rabbits, at least to me.

The book was decent as a whole, and was at least an interesting read. There were a few twists that kept me engaged, and the main character was enjoyable
(despite his constant ogling of Connie).

I will admit that it took me a few chapters to get hooked, but I ended up really enjoying this book.

While I was reading, the long and seemingly run-on chapters bothered me a bit, because I’m someone who likes to stop at chapters. But the further I got, the more I thought it was fitting for our narrator who is living her life in a jumble of conscious moments.

I do not like that the idea of sleeping through an entire year sounded so appealing to me, and it made it so much realer.

This book was a difficult read, but I did thoroughly enjoy it, and would definitely recommend.

This book made me hungry.

The way food was described in this book made my mouth water. Which did make me feel odd because I was reading a book about cannibalism.

This book was very well written. It pained me when I had to put it down. Aside from the food, Summers is amazing at making you feel like you are there. Her description and imagery are perfect. I also really enjoyed how it was written as a memoir by the main character.

One thing that hold me back from rating this book higher, is how pretentious the writing is. I understand that Dorothy herself is pretentious, and because it is written as a memoir, the writing would also be pretentious, but there is a line.

I do not enjoy reading books that make me feel stupid, or that I need a thesaurus next to me to understand it. There is no reason for the amount of obscure words used in this book.

Despite that one small qualm I have, this book is amazing. I would highly recommend it.
