In the end I was pleasantly surprised to give this 4/5. Perhaps its late redemption was apt for the religious setting of the book. The first two-thirds of it were bogged down with things I have absolutely no interest in - the Catholic Church and (to borrow from Paul Simon) a Mother and Child reunion. I came VERY close to dropping the book, which would have been a first for a series I was really enjoying.
However, the final third reverted to form (again apt given the role betting plays in the story). The unravelling of the actual murder was Cross at his neurodivergent best, and the multiple kinks in the tale of the tail made up for the tedious emotive baggage of the first half.

An interesting mix, the final story took the kindergarten kismet trope and explored it in an interesting way

The penultimate book in the series and possibly the best yet for me. Trudy getting to do official interviews, the addition of a potential love interest other than the repellent reporter, and a nifty (but fair) last minute swerve at the end as to the culprit and motive. Brava!
The first story was OK the hero of the second had zero redeeming qualities

The very personal focus of this history was interesting, but toward the end it got a bit preachy and nostalgic. Which was odd given how carefully the book detailed how bad "the good old days" really were"
