This book really did help me as a tween growing up and I can't help but add it to my Goodreads, because it's a sweet nonfiction.
What a strange little book. It memorized me. Angela Carter's writing is superb, I'll definitely be picking up more of her work.
I love this little book so much!! Diana Wynne Jones was such a talented writer. Her world, writing and characters sucked me in! Very different than the movie, but amazing in its own way.
It has been too long since I've read such a riveting, lush, page-turning YA fantasy like The Last Namsara! I couldn't put this book down once I began reading it, hence why I have two other books I started long before this one and still haven't finished. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a unique, yet still trusted fantasy story to follow certain favourite tropes, while putting plot points in that aren't expected! I love Kristen's writing style and her characters are relatable and swoon-worthy in respect to our love interest Torwin. If you haven't picked this one up yet or were on the fence, go online or to your bookstore to get this one! I can't wait for the sequel.
I don't read many classics, mainly because of the writing style, but that isn't why this book lost a star. I overall found it a pleasant read with Mary and Dickon being interesting characters. Maybe it was because I haven't immersed myself in this world in a long time, but I wished the story didn't change the focus from Mary once Colin was introduced. He was my least favourite character even with his unpleasant childhood and I didn't find him as enjoyable or as interesting as Mary (and Dickon). But the whole time I was reading I thought, "Man, I want to read a YA novel of this where they're grown up and there's an angsty romance between Mary and Dickon!" haha.
Oh my god. OH MY GOD. I haven't felt this emotional over a book in so long - especially not a YA contemporary. This book is half heartbreaking, half beautiful and I'm convinced Bowman concocted true, genuine magic into this story. I really don't know how to put into words how much I love this book, everything about it is perfect and beautiful and....*weeps*.
1) Jamie is 100% book boyfriend material. Full stop. (Can I yank him out into my life please?)
2) Bowman's use of words to describe drawings are everything. I stopped and reread many of them over the course of the story.
3) It struck a deep cord with me, what Kiko went through. I too have social anxiety, but I never realized to the extent I have it until Bowman described in such exact ways what I've experienced and felt over the years....But also the relationship with her mother struck deep, too. I am blessed to have parents who are loving and supportive of me, but I do have someone close who has grown up with the same type of mother-daughter relationship as Kiko and it broke my heart from chapter 1 to see him in Kiko.
If you haven't read this yet, what are you waiting for? Seriously? I'm a picky reader and this book has ripped out my emotions without any warning, but I don't mind at all.
