The Parcel by Anosh Irani
5.0
This book was a wonder to read and had me ensnared! Irani writing is at times beautiful but also sad and dark. It is a difficult topic that he tackeled, and his main character was morally ambiguois which often made it hard for me to root for her. However, the redemption arc at the end of the book redeemed Madhu in my eyes and created a happy ending for a book that talked about so many people's lives that were filled with hardship.
The Witches of New York by Ami McKay
4.0
Witches of New York was everything it promised when I read the summary. A story of sisterhood, magic, and Victorian charm! My only real issue with it was that the ending was quite rushed, but I think that was because there is another book on the way hopefully!
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
4.0
This book was a quick read and very enjoyable! Definitely a solid mix between Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games! I enjoyed all the characters, and thought Celena was a refreshing YA heroine. The only fault I had was that the middle was a little lackluster for me and I felt some twists were kind of ruined. However, the ending was really great and makes me want to continue with the series!
Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
4.0
What a fabulous and deliciously fantastic world that Adeyemi created for her premiere novel! It was so refreshing to read a fantasy novel taking influences from African culture, and not just being a Western Medieval/Renaissance influenced fantasy novel that we usually see. The world was so well done, the lore and history of the world was fascinating, and I was so indulged with the characters stories!
My rating is more of a 4.5 rather than a 4. The only reason I didn't rate it a 5 was because I got really upset with some of the decisions characters made (but hey, it wouldn't be a YA novel if the characters didn't make bad decisions!

The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood
4.0
A deliciously (see what i did there?) weird book! I really wasn't sure if I was going to like this one, but it had the perfect mixture of humour and existentialism. It also is an uncomfortable read, it has this dread under the mundane surface of the plot that made the book hard to put down!
My Best Friend's Exorcism by Grady Hendrix
4.0
This was mostly a cover-buy (I got the VHS-cover design) but I found myself pleased with it in the end! Hendrix provided me with a campy horror read, with also some nostalgic elements. My early teens was pretty rough (maybe not demon-possessed rough, but still rough!) and its not surprising at all that a lot of possessed characters in stories are teenage girls. They kind of serve as an archetype for this idea of being changed and taken over by a new personality. I really enjoyed this book for the way it humorously covered this premise, as well as providing some REALLY disturbing subject matter once you get further in. Really reminded me of Joe Hill's Horns in a way; its creepy and scary, but not meant to be taken TOO seriously. Ending was a little sub-par, but it was cute in a "friendship conquers all" kind of way
Women Talking by Miriam Toews
4.0
This is more of a 4.5 star review than a 4 star. As always, I was enamoured with the characters Toews created in this book. She tackled another serious topic with the bluntness that these characters approach anything, no "talking through flowers" as they would say. The commentary on a woman's place in these communities and the translation of scripture was fantastic and this book is among my favourites by Toews!
