City of Ghosts by V.E. Schwab
4.0
This is a quick read that gets your ghost story fix in. And, its both clean and fairly light, since it’s more of a children’s book! It scared me enough to get that lil adrenaline rush happening, but I also felt like I was being reassured the whole time to know it would all be okay. It’s a great ghost story with some fresh ideas.
The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

I just think Melissa Albert is a magnificent writer. I felt like every sentence had a purpose and a meaning. It wasn’t busy work or trying pages filled with basically empty space. Every sentence had purpose and meaning. This is a book I will enjoy re-reading.
Each page unfolds secrets and mysteries. Everything falls into place. You ask questions, and they are answered. Out of order, maybe, but nothing gets left behind. It’s dark and twisty and haunted. Reading it at night after everyone else had gone to sleep, and you have nothing but you, this book and a flashlight was especially fun.
I honestly don’t understand any of the negative reviews. I really don’t. This book deserves above a 4.0 rating. Every negative review on here is a big question mark to me. I’m wondering... did you read something else?? I’m confused. Hahaha.
My only qualm with this book is that I could have read it in a 3 part series, and still been hooked beginning to end. There’s a lot of adventuring and stories all in this one story. I’m incredibly excited for the next one - and for the book of Hinterland Tales!!!
Thank you Melissa, for your brain!

Stepsister by Jennifer Donnelly

4.5 rating rounded up to 5. This is a smart story with a lot of quotable quotes! It’s about feminism and change, and how every single one of us defines our own fate. I loved the writing, the characters and the storyline.
This is very cheesy. It has a blurb in the beginning talking about how “dark” the story is. Haha. It’s not. It’s pretty fluffy. The narrator breaks out of telling the story to talk to the reader. The style is very much fairytale storytelling, making sure to involve the listener, if that makes sense. I don’t love that style of storytelling, but this book does a good job of doing it.
I wish Chance was in it more! I want a book all about Chance and his entourage and I want a love story too! Can Chance find love?? With Opportunity or Love?? He’s the best part of this book! I haven’t had a big book crush in a while!
This book is FUNNY. It made me chuckle out loud several times! It stays true to who Cinderella was, which I love, because Cinderella may not be my favorite princess but she sure is a special one. This story made me tear up in a few places. And it kept me fairly hooked.
This is one I’ll reread through the years. Thank you for your mind, Jennifer Donnelly!
