i actually don’t know how i got this far into the book LOL i just remember wanting something to read on my way back home the day after the laufey concert in dc. i did highlight some lines and passages but ultimately manguel’s style is too erudite for my liking

ok i only read the essays and the accompanying notes for now, but the recipes and ambition and curiosity and love are so terribly kapampangan LOL i love everything about this and i’m happy it’s out there. it’s not a perfect book but i’m  too pleased and proud(?!) as a fellow kapampangan-american to care. desperately need to make all the cookies and that banger of a last recipe (melon chicharron crumble) 😮‍💨 for my loved ones, no less!!!

also she’s so real for thinking she never fit in with typical fil-ams growing up just bc she was a dorky scene girl LMAO i don’t have a single unique experience

i don’t agree with all the reviews saying they were expecting something more cohesive and complete and meaningful; i think the title fit exactly what the author intended this to be.  just felt like something fun if not at least cathartic for her to do

like now i want to make an ordinary ass self-indulgent autobiographical graphic novel. we should want queer stories to be so mainstream that they’re not impressive anymore. we should be overwhelmingly visible to the point where non-queer people aren’t hateful about our existence, just bored and minding their own business. i like how “unspecial” this was, in that case. maybe i didn’t learn anything new compared to my own experiences as a queer diaspora poc, but i am comforted and reassured that it’s not always so tragic even if it isn’t perfect either.

still need more queer joy though. in another life for any of us, it’d be present from the very start rather than anywhere from our 20s to the years where we’re senile adjacent. i hope sezen has it for the rest of hers.

it was difficult to put down but also really easy to skim through a lot of the passages haha. anyway, i deeply respect alex’s resolve and development + his beautiful friendship with charlie in this span of 8-9 years. fuck war!
