Wow... not a fan. 2 stars because of its influence in science fiction which I cannot deny, but I’m fairly certain I won’t read this again :/

I’ve been trying to read this book since it came out in 2014 and honestly a binge read is the best way to read this book because it can be a little... boring. There just were some parts that seemed to drag on and on without much change or drama.
The premise is definitely awesome and I had a good time reading this book it’s just now I understand WHY after 6-ish years I struggled to get through this book once. Once I got some steam (because it is a very fast read and I like to see how many pages I’ve read) I really appreciated a lot of the detail. This is a book that’s written rather simply but is chock full of imagination.
I will probably pick up the sequel because I liked this book despite some of its flaws and I feel like there’s a chance the books will mature as I work through the series and I’m excited to see that.
Also this book had some really dark parts. Like I was shocked at some of the violence, but I really liked that about it. It didn’t shy away from the dark which is exactly what’s needed when you do a dark retelling.

I thought this book was really interesting, it had some really cool concepts, so I’m not mad I read it. BUT the writing really wasn’t that good, it’s very “show not tell”. Plus it’s kind of awkward how society changes to be mostly homosexual and the main character is like “I’m tolerant” when he’s really not, he’s just fine with lesbians and not gay men (SOOOOO PAST THAT IDEA). BUT, it was published in 1974 and i like the anti-war/ anti- Vietnam war narrative. The technology and plot in it is pretty cool (but tbh it got pretty boring near the end) and it definitely puts the science in science fiction.

This book was beautifully drawn, beautifully told. It is so gentle and understanding and I love it. I have recommended this book to so many people. If you are thinking about reading this, definitely do it! You won't regret it!

I wish I could express how good this book was for me. It was LONG, it was SAD, it was SATISFYING. This is one of my favorite book series now, and I know it will have a special place in my heart for so, so long. I am currently grappling with a terrible book hangover because of Winter, but I just feel so grateful to live in the parallel universe where this series exists as it does now.

There’s a reason this book is the series favorite, ok? I am so pumped to read Winter now, but I don’t know if I will love it as much as Cress. At the very least, this is becoming one of my favorite book series ever. SO much love and respect to Miss Marissa Meyer.
