Not sure if it was the translation or just me being not very bright, but I was confused most of the time. There were a lot of prose that went over my head, could be for the same reasons.
With that said this one focuses on the postcolonial times and the arab-african cultures. We get an in-depth view of their way of lives and how it could be affected. The tone of the book got more grim as the story progressed. It was a harrowing read

Human beings would always need an amount of terrorizing for them to realize how stupid they are as a species

The author nailed the gothic tone very well but it was so short to the point of feeling very much unfinished. The story was engaging and I was looking forward to knowing how Carmila became the way when she met Laura. But that part felt too concise which is actually fair given that it was the first book to broach the topic of vampires, even before the famous Dracula. It would've been a more satisfying read if one did not have any prior knowledge of vampires if any kind.
