When I talk about how much I love cannibalism metaphor this is exactly what I mean

- The vibes of this were just so good… it was simultaneously delicious and grotesque prose filled with overflowing amounts of love but also the painful absence of it.
- cannibalism as a force to explore incredibly messy, painful, & abusive mother/daughter dynamics + sapphic love
- being in the mind of the child for this book was paaaainful

Dooku: Jedi Lost

Cavan Scott

DID NOT FINISH: 68%

DNF 68% in, I think this is the first Star Wars book I’ve DNF’d ??

I wanted to love this so bad and I really did love all of the Dooku lore that we were getting; I genuinely think he’s such an interesting character and I wish there was more background on him.

I was just confused listening along to this and I found all the jumps around timelines and settings too discombobulating & hard to follow
dark tense

I definitely enjoyed this more than The Hacienda!!

Positives:
- I love when vampires are actually gross & freakish & monsters
- the romance 🤌🤌 all of the yearning and tension and drama my gOD
- the overall vibes and aesthetic were soooooo good
- i love the slow creeping gothic horror of these books and how even though they have genuine supernatural horrors happening, the true villainy in some form is always the colonizers/oppressors in some way & i think it’s a brilliant way to explore commentary

Negatives:
- sometimes I think this author struggles a little bit in her storytelling? This one definitely felt stronger, but I still felt a liiiittle meh about it all in the end?
- I don’t understand why these books aren’t categorized as historical romances with horror elements 🤔. There is undeniably horror in her books, but I feel like they (so far) have first and foremost been romances?? Idk, I think the marketing of these as horror novels is working against them a little bit?

Wowowowowowowowowow

For the majority of this book I was sitting at a pretty solid 4.75-5⭐️ rating and adored this. The last 100 pages I kind of have some critiques of however do that dropped my rating a liiiittttlleee bit

Positives:
- the vibes??? Holy fuck??? Genuinely such a unique and eclectic writing style that i think arguably could be comp’d to so many different things and yet strongly stand on its own?
- like: The Neverending Story meets Once Upon a Time meets Once Upon a Broken Heart, meets Legendborn meets The Raven Boys meets lowkey Sharkboy and Lavagirl with a romance dynamic that kinda gave CaitVi a little bit dare I say??? I know that sounds like a LOT but it all works…….
- the romance?? I was locked tf in and I would not call this a smutty book by any means, but when they fuck… they FUCKKKKKKKK
- the writing style was beautiful and so whimsical, same with the world
- the commentary in this type of fantasy world ate the house down & I can’t wait for others to experience it

Negatives:
- I have to be honest and say that there were elements of the story/worldbuilding that felt a little lacklustre/not-explained and for the most part I easily overlooked that, but the last 100 pages undeniably left me with a little bit of a …. That was it…? Feeling. It just felt like this big, slow, epic build-up to a conclusion that was kind of rushed and not fully fleshed out?? I don’t know exactly, but it honestly was kind of unsatisfying.

Honestly…. Didn’t really care about this at all and this had some of my favourite characters in it???

I fear I maybe needed to rewatch ATLA before dabbling with this?? I don’t really remember anything about Jin & I’m finding myself unsure of the other side stories/plot and the overall point of it & how much I was supposed to already know going into this??

I think when I rewatch ATLA I may come back and dabble with this

Dragon Haven

Don’t care where’s Rick (Fitzloved)…..

Soft dnf’ing this at 25% and skipping to The Fitz & the Fool trilogy because I simply have 0 desire to read this 🤷

I looked up a summary of this series & perhaps whenever I re-read ROTE I’ll actually finish these, but for now I need my Fitzloved so desperately
emotional hopeful lighthearted relaxing fast-paced

This was cute!

A wholesome portrayal of grief & this actually had a pretty strong story/plot in my opinion. I don’t know that the writing/romance was always the strongest, but I honestly had a good time with this.

This felt reminiscent of the movie Casper & the character Lydia Deetz from Beetlejuice

Cozy horror deniers just haven’t read this book yet….

The Haar is part tender-hearted romance and part folk horror and it weaves deeply wholesome moments with absolutely grotesque body horror and I had so much fun with this!

This book simultaneously made me cry, & made me clap my hands over my mouth in shock at some of it’s wild subject matter lmao

This felt kinda anticlimactic in some ways, but I also did tear up and was kinda flabbergasted at some stuff that went down.

Burryaga and Bell’s dynamic in this was my favourite!!!
