This was up there with my most anticipated reads so I’m definitely very disappointed. I loved Mexican Gothic and have been really excited to read another novel by her, but I’m just very bored & nothing is gripping me really?

I love gothic lit, ancestral witches and folklore and the fact that all of the characters are English Majors or adjacent sounds sooo up my alley but honestly I just wasn’t vibing

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

A simultaneously tender-hearted & grief stricken novel filled with sentient forests, ancient folklore, Eldritch horrors, Jewish mythology, magic, & history, and an absolutely swoony sapphic romance & i sincerely enjoyed my reading experience of this 🫶

Maddie painted such a beautiful story here filled with commentary, hope, grief, and love & I think many will love this story :)

Say sike rn……

I really liked this & I’m so surprised they cut this out of the show?? This felt like very very important to the clone wars tv show…?

Anyways… my only beef and maybe hot take is I didn’t loooove the romance in here & I’m kinda mad and devastated at that ending but also it is what it is.

Ventress you are and will always be my favourite clone wars character

Devastated??? This ruined my night tbh!!!???

In what fucking world is a book of medieval dark fantasy horror that follows a sapphic polycule with a lady knight and demonic-esque cannibalistic saints and a tale of mystery where all of the characters are manipulated into essentially states of psychosis while trapped and starving during a seige NOT FUCKING SLAPPING ASTRONOMICALLY HARD???????

Apparently this one 😔✊

This Premise was so unbelievably good and I honestly was really loving some of the quotes in here & I’m also sad because I paid for this hardcover book (in Canada these books r fukin expensive lol)

Positives:
- the dynamic obviously was really interesting
- the medieval horror/cannibalism was sooooo divine
- the toxic sapphic yearning was very good at times
- very delicious writing at times

Negative:
- this just felt allllll oveerrrr the fucking place in an extremely discombobulating way that made it a very confusing reading experience. By the halfway point I was just annoyed and found myself pretty much completely unable to follow along with each character and their dynamics with each other. Way too confusing.

I have to be honest and say I’m a bit let down by this one 😬. I adored the first instalment & it was a 5⭐️ read for me; this one just felt not as cohesive?

Positives:
- Lei…. & Meilin’s dynamic with Lei was the hard carry of this book
- the first 1/3 I was pretty locked in and felt like this was gonna be another 5⭐️
- I gotta give it to K. X. Song, her writing style is very addictive

Negatives:
- I feel like the story/plot/world all felt a little rushed and thrown together in this one?? It honestly kind of lost me :(
- Sky bro 🫠 He was so insufferable to read and I was down with his character arc but I also kinda feel like it felt forced and kinda out of nowhere after the build up of his character in the first book??? Idk, but he was actually so fucking annoying to read that it killed some of my enjoyment of this book
- the fucking love triangle dude oh my god……. Sky became actually insufferable and irredeemable and Song continuously toying with this “will they won’t they” even after all the heinous bs Sky was doing…… insane work (derogatory)

I really really like Alise and I need her to receive a better character arc then Althea did or I will crash out.

At first I felt deeply unsure about this book and was teetering on dnf’ing & just skipping to the last Fitzloved trilogy. However, google overwhelmingly said you appreciate them more if you read these, so I am pushing through. This did grow on me though & I became quite attached to Alise and her interesting dynamic with Sedric. I really want to murder her husband & I’m gonna be angry if he gets a redemption arc!!!!! Don’t do this to me Robin!!!!!!!!! After the fuckery that was liveship I deserve more my diva!!!! I’m also very intrigued by Thymara and interested to see more about the dragons and see where this quartet is going

Now I don’t want to overhype this, & speaking as someone who is often a romantasy hater, this was so fun.

I think an important thing to note is the lore around the creation of this book; this is not just a random fantasy romance that takes place in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. This is a story that was bred from the second campaign of critical role and was often referenced as a deeply silly smutty romance book that one of the characters loved & this is the irl version of that story.

While it is silly and unserious at times, I actually thought the story in itself was really strong & I was invested in the characters and their romance. I thought it was very romantic and tender while also having high stakes plots and storytelling & really well written smut that did have me kicking my feet and twirling my hair and the like.

Think Anna x Kristoff meets Fiona x Shrek meets Snowman x The Huntsman meets Rapunzel x Flynn Ryder and I’m dead serious (this archetype of trope hits different almost every time)

This is definitely not the most unique story ever to be really real, but it just worked for me & it’s been genuinely so long since I’ve read & sincerely enjoyed a romantasy so I’m :)))

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

My biggest critique of this series so far has been feeling like the plot isn’t the strongest & being very confused/left in the dark about the bad guys & the how/why/what/when of them of their intentions.

This book cleared up a lot about the Nihil & made Lourna Dee a really really dimensional & interesting character! I truly think she’s perhaps become my favourite of this era & this was such a gripping journey!!!  I was in tears and on the edge of my seat

Also just a note that all Star Wars audiobooks have sound effects and slap but specifically the audio performances are some of the best things I’ve ever listened to and this was right up in that category. It was like listening to a Star Wars movie in the best way and I was absolutely gripped.

My only critique of this book is I do feel like the plot in the second half lost me a littttttlleeee bit, but it wasn’t detrimental

The Tale of the Body Thief

Anne Rice

DID NOT FINISH: 46%

Time of death: 194 pages

Reasoning: *SPOILER WARNING* She made Lestat a fucking rapist and proceeded to uwu-ify the scene by “he didn’t know ://// it was so different in his time ://///, he’s more animal then man & he wouldn’t know what a condom is :///”-ing the situation & I can’t defend you in these conditions Anne!!!!

I knew I would give up on these books eventually, but I thought I would get further than this one!

& when I say the Fool is my favourite character I’ve ever read?????

GOD what the FUCK Robin Hobb what the FUCKKKKKKKKKK

Anyways lol….

- the character work is so masterful in a way not many things can even remotely come close too
- the epic scale of the story in this is honestly amazing & makes my heart ache
- Fitzloved…… how you will always continue to kill me & kick me while I’m down
- Fitz…. I just need him to have one moment of fucking happiness and why is that TOO MUCH TO ASK FOR
- made me cry
- the magic system….. I cannot wait to see how the events of this trilogy affect the rest of the story/world
- the skill magic system found family dynamic between all of these characters is as beautiful as it is gutwrenching
- The Fool and I cannot express this enough, THE FOOL

- Molly 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 (I’m a Molly hater; sorry if that’s shitty of me, but it’s just how I feel)
