A very devastating dnf 12% in:
- First of all; I adored Iron Widow (structural issues aside) & think this world is so fricken cool & love Wu Zetian and her rage, as well as the polyamory & disability rep
- this book this feels so unbelievably messy, I’m quite surprised it was even greenlit yet…? (Maybe this is harsh of me, I love Xiran so I feel quite bad and homie if you’re seeing this I’m genuinely so sorry)
- the dialogue is just so cringe, & the world feels all over the place & the inclusion of this new emperor feels so random and jarring and forced (though he’s definitely giving Zuko & I was kinda vibing)
- maybe this isn’t a fair judgement as I didn’t finish the book, and spoilers for the first few chapters, but Zetian’s disability felt like such a huge part of her character and the commentary, and to have her disability cured in the first few chapters had me very :/
- I just can’t force myself to read this & I’m quite sad because Iron Widow was one of my favourite reads of 2022 & this feels incredibly disappointing

I wish I had something juicier to tell you, but I got 20 pages in and decided I didn’t care. I’m so very sorry Ava

Positives:
- for my inner child/nostalgia and love of this show/these characters/this world/this story etc., this is a 5⭐️ in my heart
- Tyrion & Arya’s perspectives were my favourite
- book Tyrion is a Targaryen I said what I said
- I loved experiencing this in a way unmarked by the horrendous creators of the tv show
Negatives:
- George why did we make Daenerys so young :////
- George why did we write the Dothraki like that :///////

Positives:
- a genre-bending and super weird and unique literary gothic fiction/horror.
- I love love love love fungal horror and I feel like the way with which that was utilized in this gothic haunted house commentary breaking down eugenics, colonialism, & violence towards women was really cool to read.
- I wholeheartedly feel like this is the perfect introductory book to read if you are looking to get into books on “the gothic.” This is very fast paced, & the commentary I feel is pretty easy to pick up on and follow along with.
- the muggy claustrophobic atmosphere and constant looming threats of different forms of violence I feel was written quite well & made for a much more horrifying read then I expected
- this just felt very Monster House meets The Hacienda meets What Moves the Dead
Negatives:
- this is literally just me being a hater & I can fully rationalize many reasons as to why Sylvia made this choice overall, but I personally am a Francis hater & without spoilers I was not the biggest fan of the attitude towards him in the end.

Positives:
- this was so perfectly a blend of Caraval & Kingdom of the Wicked & those vibes were pretty fun!
- I also think this movie incorporated some elements of dark fantasy like Labyrinth, Legend, Casper, Danny Phantom etc., as well as gothic classics like phantom of the opera in fun ways
- the love interest felt like Astarion from bg3 & Wrath from Kingdom of the Wicked, Jareth from Labyrinth, & Thranduil from The Hobbit spliced into one character
- the devils reminded me a lot of Raphael & Mizora from bg3
Negatives:
- really cringe smut & dialogue at times soldiers…. Felt deeply unserious
- at times the writing felt very juvenile and there definitely were some inconsistencies in the story/plot that were never really explained away
- like kingdom of the wicked, I hate the mystery time period this is set in. It’s set in New Orleans in some mystery time that feels very modern with all of the “I love so fucking much angel, fuck. You’re so strong and brave” cringe modern dialogue, but then the mc was always in a corset and elaborate dresses?????

the thing is that I was wholly and truly really loving the first like 150 pages & felt like it was gonna be a new favourite read, but the 100 pages after that completely lost me & I had no idea what was happening and it felt like simlish……

Such an interesting take on a feminist Dracula retelling that really turns major tropes from gothic Victorian literature on their heads in pretty out of the box ways!
I have been DYING for a Lucy retelling every since I read Dracula in Uni & this was everything I could have dreamed for. It’s told much in the style of Interview with the Vampire, & gives Lucy the sapphic story and journey she always deserved and I adore Kiersten for that. I do think the ending portions in a lot of ways became really similar to Twilight (which was both fun and silly and also cringe) & in the modern timeline near the end it did kind of lose me at times and feel a tad corny/unfulfilling if I’m being super real.
However, I still adored so much of this book & it’s commentary, & just getting more Lucy & she felt sooooooooo real to me.
I loved this 🤷, ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
