fast-paced

I feel like I would have loved this when I was 16 while scrolling on Tumblr in 2015 & Skins (UK) plays in the background. POV my favourite books in my youth were Looking for Alaska, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, & Milk and Honey

Tbh idk I’m a Neil Gaimen girlie…. I love his whimsy but I can just tell it’s written by a man & reading this is kinda ruining the movie for me so I’m over it

Robin Hobb you will answer for this……..

Positives:
- I adored the medieval fairytale-esque writing style, it truly felt like I was being told a fable at times… like yes I’ll take your finest mead with a bread roll, some dried meat and a barrel of cheese if I may……..
- fitz …. 🫶😢 my little man deserves so much love
- I’m an absolute sucker for the “oh no! I’ve become a parent!” Trope with a traumatized hermit like man accumulating a traumatized child and the found family that entails.
- I’m so excited to see more of the dynamic between Fitz & the Fool & in general just more of the fool
- the game of thrones: specifically Stark/Jon Snow vibes were a slay
- the magic system is literally so cool and interesting
- Nosy is the goodest boy

Negatives:
- in the last 150 pages the pacing kinda fumbled a little bit at times, and I felt like chunks could have been cut from that section.
- I’m still very confused as to why there’s an issue with Fitz’s animal magic?? Maybe I just missed something but I don’t get why it’s an issue…?

Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Positives:
- I enjoyed this! I thought the world was really interesting and unique
- I loved the whimsy writing style?? V.E. Schwab has such a distinct literary voice and it’s so cool how all their works are so vastly different & yet have some aura of Schwab that covered the work?? I love them
- I love morally grey protagonists!
- very fast paced and V.E. Schwab’s short chapters speak to me

Negatives:
- I do think at times it felt a little tropey for the sake of it & not super believable? Oftentimes things felt too convenient for the characters/story with not a lot of payoff, and the dynamic between Lila and Kell was a confusing array of almost… insta-love? For lack of a better word? Now hear me out, I know there’s not really any legitimate romance in this, I more so am regarding the at times blind faith and trust they put into each other, and then *spoiler alert* the kiss?? Felt random?? Idk…..

Overall, I had a lot of fun with this & it was quite easy to read/fly through! I have some things i’m being picky about, but I’m excited to see where this trilogy goes & I could see it getting potentially better and better and perhaps even inspiring me the raise my rating for this one higher; we shall see
