There were lots of cute and silly moments that I did enjoy & I liked all of the nerdy little references, but this felt veeerrryyy meh to me.
- It felt like it was trying really hard to almost copy the dynamics of The Love Hypothesis a bit
- the You’ve Got Mail-core dynamic was super obvious
- the “he’s sooo big I’m soooo little got really old
- some of the tension build up and miscommunication was kinda fun in this actually, and I enjoyed the random high stakes plot twist in the end, but overall this will probably be my least favourite of Ali’s

I really enjoy this story & the supernatural AHS Coven coded vibes of it all. I also really enjoy all the full chested fuck you terfs and bigots vibes and there are a lot of really good conversations and representations between books one and two.
My main beef is I fear this book kinda lost the plot/the characters kinda felt flat?? Book one was a super fun and also rageful introduction to this trilogy, but I’m left feeling a tad lukewarm after this one?? I think I’ll still finish the trilogy when book 3 is out though.

DNF 50% in, I know the Phantasma girlies will eat this up and I’m not saying it’s bad, however I’m just cringing at all of the straight behaviour

Waaaaaar iiiiissss ooooooveerrrrrrrr (I’m free from this hell trilogy we are so back)
My rambling thoughts:
- still such a cool premise with the liveship magic system 10/10 a crazy cool unique idea
- I literally only liked Althea and Vivacia & they are so tragic my dude
- why did like every girl in this series get violently SA’d at some point 🧍
- Wintrow is a coward and a loser sorry
- I could kill Kennitt & Kyle with my bare hands
- Brashen also fucking sucks idc
- the entire series I never cared about Malta and thought she was annoying I’m sorry
- I guess dragons are cool

Hear me out: Princess Mononoke meets Blue Eye Samurai
Positives:
- wildly unique and whimsical storytelling??
- the flowery writing…. The lyricism in these quotes man…. I annotated quite a bit
Negatives:
- I don’t think this needed to be as convoluted & confusing to follow, while I really respect all of the unique things this is doing & had a really good time at different parts, I’m coming away from it not actually even really understanding the core story??
- the purple prose was a double edged sword I fear because at times I did think it was a tad much.
Ultimately, the interwoven perspectives of the grandmother telling a story to her grandson, the theatre production dream-esque sequences, the fantasy journey, all the 2nd person POV’s were all such creative ways to talk this story and I have to give it props for how cool this book sincerely is. At the same time, I am walking away from it only really having a probably less than basic understanding of what I read which is a problem. I am someone who is prone to skimming when I get bored in books, but I really did not skim with this one and in fact was constantly re-reading portions that were confusing and looking up other people’s reviews to try to break things down even further. I fear it’s a tad too smart for me perhaps?? Or it is just doing a bit too much?? Idk, I’m probably the problem.

this was very wholesome :) | Thank you to netgalley for approving me for this e-arc!!
Positives:
- I loved the all of small town queer rep & conversations!
- Gay 😤 Barn 🫡
- a personal teehee haha but one of my current bg3 campaigns I am playing a blonde paladin (based on a trans link from legend of Zelda) & I’m romancing wild magic barbarian Karlach and reading the dnd romance in here felt so specific and similar to that campaign of mine and it made me giggle & also happy
- lot of really important conversations in here & I’m so happy that teens are able to access books like this today :)
Negatives:
- I do think the overall trajectory of the story felt very predictable & done before if you will. It really took me out of it at times & there were pretty big chunks I found myself skimming unfortunately.
