challenging informative slow-paced

Morals of the story:
- getting on a boat is a bad idea
- if you come across sheep don’t eat them without asking (might result in mass slaughter of your crew)
medium-paced

Somehow read this entire book in one sitting??

Overall I really enjoyed this! It reminded me a lot of the movie “The Lighthouse” and was an interesting genre breaking mix of Dark Fantasy/Light Horror/Romance (smutty romance as well as tender romance)

I vibed!

My only beef is at times the pacing felt a tad off and I would find myself twiddling my thumbs wanting the plot to get on with it which took me out of it a bit, but I had fun!

Plot or Character Driven: Character

Very conflicted about my thoughts on this!

Positives:
- very delicious/decadent writing
- I loved the angst
- I was quite impressed by all of the literary callbacks/references
- very similar writing style and tone to Angels Before Man!!!

Negatives:
- there was just something missing for me a little bit. I loved the first half & was sitting at a solid 4-5⭐️, but the second half kind of lost me a little?
- I know this is conflicting, but I feel like there was so much going on it almost should have been a longer novel? Or some of the plot/references should have been cut to have this feel a little sharper?? Idk exactly, but something just felt a little off with the pacing
- this one is me being picky, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of how Judas was characterized/his lore changed??

Reading this almost a year after its publication since the events of the US election is absolutely enraging.

This is a very hard read; major TW for Rape, SA, Domestic Violence, Addiction/Alcoholism.

Ma-Nee’s story is absolutely devastating, but also very empowering.

positives:
- I do feel like the characterizations in here are really strong; also, the world/lore felt well researched.
- I loved Ambessa’s multilayered rageful badass perspective & her unwavering loyalty to her family that leads to questionable morals at times.
- I really enjoyed Mel’s perspectives & those were probably my favourite portions of this book.
- I also think there were some epic quotes/moments in here, & some fun league name drops.
- I was locked in enough to binge this book in pretty much a day and a half?

Negatives:
- My issues are in the story/plot structure primarily. It really just felt like this didn’t really go anywhere new? It just felt pretty repetitive & laid out what the Medarda’s were up to leading up to the Arcane show, all of which we are already told/shown on the show??

I’m quite surprised there haven’t been more Arcane/League books coming out…? (I have read the Lux graphic novels and loved those, and I am interested in trying out Ruination) I feel there’s definitely a market for more!!! I would love to know Ekko’s journey into the Fireflies/Post Arcane Ekko, & prequel Vander x Silco. I’m not a CaitVi shipper personally, but I know maaaaannnyyy diva’s love them and I feel there’s a market for a post Arcane book about them?? Or Jayvik??? Heimerdinger???? Jinx (surviving season 2) and heading to Demacia to kick it with Lux??? I’m just surprised they aren’t doing more because the people want it!!!

I know my rating is low for this, but I do think if you love Arcane but most especially loved Mel or Ambessa, or if you are a League fan who loves Noxus this might be for you 🤪

What a beautiful book 🥺🫶

This memoir weaves together Roza’s journeys both away from and towards her queerness, her Muslim identity, and also her family/friends. This novel talks about so many beautiful themes like the love but also the agony between mothers and daughters, as well as sisters, religious communities, queer communities, the treatment of women in Iran, queer identity in Iran, queer communities in Canada, feminism, Muslim feminism, as well as the realities of growing up with all of these intersecting identities.

This story is beautiful and important and one that I think everyone can take someone away from.
