I really thought we were going to get more from this family and see their close bond, but Gus and Owen spoke to each other like they were strangers and I think that bled into the rest of the entire story. It felt like no one had close relationships. Even the one that built between Owen and Lila felt like it was lacking substance. I think too much of their relationship building was happening off screen. Some of the dialogue came across cringe and the sex scenes weren't very enticing. I actually ended up skimming most of them. It's such a bummer that this wasn't quite what I wanted. I'll try the second book in this series and decide on how I feel about the author. Sadly this was not a good first entry.

This book unfortunately felt like a whole lot of nothing happened. The ending didnt' gag me or anything. I guess I'll read the next one but I'm definitely in no rush.

This somehow felt too long lol. I didn't love the narrators and Sprig was not my favorite. This was okay. Nothing amazing. Some tense moments and some fun. At times the leads were frustrating but they finally got it together. Also pretty decent steam.

Definitely not my favorite read by this author but it was alright. I didn't love the lying. I understood it but hated it. Jacobi has me listening to books I don't even love lol.

Talia Hibbert has done it again. This book hit me at the right time. So perfect for Black History Month and the current fucked up political climate currently. I loved the relationship these two shared and they were frustrating as hell but you could really sense the depth of their love for one another. I loved it!

The writing was not great - it felt very cringe. And it honestly lacked sex considering the cover of the book. It's a forgettable read.

This was so well written! I am excited to read more from this author. The authors note really emphasized how incredibly important it was to hear this story. Pheby was so infuriating at times. I just think her story was so well crafted. Nothing about this story is "nice" but it's a reminder of the vastly different experiences people had during slavery.

For most of this book, it was sitting at a solid 3 star for me. The relationship building felt a little rushed at the beginning. I also felt like Killian was an OTT asshole. Like it was a bit much hearing the way he spoke to this woman he eventually fell in love with. It was also jarring because when we got to his chapters, you could tell her admired her spirit and enjoyed that she could dish it, but the way he spoke to her just did not translate well. And yes, I get it, he was pushing her away but my goodness I don't think I could rock with Killian myself. Sylvie also unfortunately came across so immature at the beginning too. She was irking me to no end in the first part of the book. So clearly I had to build to like these two characters. I think they were frustrating to no end. But my goodness when they decided to love one another it crushed me to bits. I appreciated the amount of family we had involved here. Seeing them both defend each other was pretty incredible. The last 20% of the book is what broke me. I hate third act breakups but this one felt so necessary and I blubbed through the whole thing! It just felt so close to my heart because I've been there waiting for a man who I know is the love of my life and even though he told me not to wait for him I couldn't stop myself because I loved him so much. I just yeah, it was wonderful.

I'm so sorry but this was simply not well written. I just think it lacked in true relationship building. Some of the steam was fun. I think the story felt rushed and I didn't really understand what they liked about one another outside of their "attraction" which doesn't even translate on page lol. I would have loved to see some more of Seb's parents and Callie's lovely family instead of some of the background BS with the actual contestants. Ugh, what a shame.
