I like the idea of this book. And maybe I will return to it at another time. Looking for something different right now for my reading.

Stories #2 & #4 were beautiful. The other stories weren’t great.

Typical romcom. Characters were contrived, storyline cliché, the writing contradicted itself from one page to the next. Sex scenes weren’t even that hot.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story from Summers. So many poignant moments amidst the landscape of murder, cannibalism, and meat. I found the female friendship between our MC and Emma to be particularly moving and relatable. A fascinating story told from a villain’s perspective. 5 stars! I highly recommend.

A gripping story set in an alternate America, very similar to our own. Personally I found the MC, Jean, very relatable. And I felt like her inner struggles were almost more compelling than the rather fast-paced, sometimes confusing plot. Dalcher created a well rounded character with personal flaws and struggles that compels the story forward. Heartbreaking but I like that the author goes into the nitty gritty of how this AU might work. Maybe sometimes felt unbelievable but I was hooked.

I decided to set this book down because I felt like I knew how the rest of the story was going to play out. I flipped 2/3rds of the way through and didn’t feel compelled to keep reading.

There are a few promising moments throughout this book. However, I would say this book was confusing, contradictory, and had way too many…ideas? The author threw everything at us that could have happened. A story about feminism, survival, love, murder, hysteria, rebellion, and more. Which would have been great if it felt cohesive. We catch glimpses of the protagonist having these deep like character, flaw, life-changing moments that are based on her character flaws, but they’re so brief there’s like the plot there’s too much going on and it’s hard to stay focused. It’s it’s almost like in real life the character wouldn’t be able to have these big transcendental moments because they’re in survival mode. Many of these character building bits feel forced. It portrays itself as feminist literature but completely fell into the “women are evil in cliques” trope. LOTS of fade-to-black
