The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion

Patient and reflective. Reading this while feeling massive amounts of grief on both a personal and global level, as well as borrowing a great deal of grief/sorrow for the future. I did a LOT of boohooing.

Brilliantly written!! Gorgeous! Also everything Maria has ever done has always been right and I will hear nothing to the contrary!

Realizing I’m at the point where bubblegummy lit like this that’s written to appease a very specific sort of person who doesn’t want anything too intense about Blackness or gayness, who wants to read something with the veneer of edginess is not for me. Softcore porn about an overworked, underpaid, treated like less than dog shit sleeping car porter ( and sort of bastardizing the stories of real porters to play as a back drop to Swirl Sex and Bold, Brave White Allies) doesn’t appeal to me. Shoutout to the no kink at pride, rainbow capitalism middle class Billy Porters this was made for tho!

TLDR; inoffensive and boring, not even risqué enough to say something sexy or brave enough to do anything more than nip at white people/white supremacy. Mindblowingly dull.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 9%.
I thought I was being impatient but it's really not for me. Idk if it's well-written. Just empty.

Weird and unwieldy, horrifying and intense but fascinating. I know I'll have to read it again, because right now I'm just rattled and confused.

Tough read, but concise and competent. It does exactly what it sets out to do,

Intensely reflective and familiar to me, as a person who grew up in the church. Honestly, one of his best works.

Interesting but confusing! Told in a very experimental style; I'll give it another read in a year or so.

Sometimes you'll start a book series you missed when you were a kid thinking that the books about morphing kids would just be them going on cutesy Scooby Doo adventures, and then it's 22 books later and a teenage girl is coming to terms with the fact that war has ruined her. She can no longer be a child; she trapped a boy in the body on a rat, she is capable of extreme violence, and not only does she know it but her friends know it too. Um. She still has a calculus test tomorrow, btw.
