This is my first reread as an adult and I got to say this book wasn't as liked this read through. It's amazing how many spelling mistakes are in this book. There is racism which is I guess was prevalent during the time period, but is as distasteful as it always has and will be. My Dad was reading it with me, and we had to stop reading to keep asking, "What about Carrie? Where is baby Carrie tho?" As she was so often forgotten that it became a joking concern to us.
This book is a very nice lead-in to the series and I can't wait to continue on the journey. I liked Essie's attitude in this book and the themes of choosing to love. This doesn't feel super high-stakes fantasy, so if you're expecting that going in it might feel a little slow, but for someone who prefers cozy fantasy (while incorporating battles and subtle intrigue) I felt this novel was written well. I was reading the book with my brother so my brother randomly gave Laesornysh a Russian accent which may have added to the humour of the book a little. It may be strange, but I'm also now invested in the elven shampoo and conditioner side plot. Definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I love this series and this book so much. Arvel and Myth have become my favourite of the series, though I admit I doubted it before I picked up the book. The Honour Guard Captain Trio appeared again and I adore that they had their moments in this story. The writing is fun and makes the read feel quick and enjoyable. Plus seeing our other couples included but not taking over the story was well spun. I definitely recommend reading this series!
I feel this volume sets up for future events. Seeing Yona dealing with side-effects of everything that has happened, really hit, after all, she is still a teen. As always our author manages to add humour to make the darker themes bearable. Hak imitating Ao made me laugh. Pu-kyu!
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

This first volume does an excellent job introducing us to the world and characters. It's a fun read while also building the beginnings an intriguing political plot. The artwork is unique and beautiful so it's a joy reading through the pages.

I flew through this second novel which follows characters that were introduced in the first, while still including our main couple in book one. There was more action in this book, I feel the stakes are slowly being raised, but it was still a fairly cosy read. Again, I absolutely loved that our Honor Guard side-characters were included, they truly are precious beans.
This is a cozy, low-stakes fantasy romance and such an easy and fun read. I found I enjoyed the main characters and honestly wanted to adopt some of the side characters especially our Honor Guard trio. You can tell there is some political intrigue building for the series but it's done subtly so that it doesn't hurt the brain to think about. A very sweet and lovely fantasy romance, can't wait to read the rest of the series.
