a business class, an in-depth look into the 2010's, and a gossip sesh all in one. meltzer told us what happened, gave her opinion when it mattered, and she didn't miss a single spot. as a glossier supporter and avid reader of into the gloss i was so excited for this book, and it did not disappoint. love love LOVE

Did not finish book. Stopped at 37%.
the decision-making by the protagonist felt so irrational and outlandish that i wished it was a book about mental health instead.
but in truth, i just couldn't get over him punching her in the face.

i think nelson's writing is beautiful. trust me when i say i highlighted and annotated the shit out of it. i will say, however, that i wished it had more personal anecdotes over the history of blue and how other people perceive it. but i wonder if that's a fair thing to ask of her work? and what if that was the true point? does she owe us that? not really. nevertheless, i thoroughly enjoyed. i'm glad i finally read it.

small but might. i want it to be 200 pages longer. i want to read about her whole life after reading this. this is about so much: racism, classism, freedom (or lack thereof) in artistic expression, advocacy, and transparency. it begs the question: who is responsible for cleaning the wounds left behind by the world, when they're so deep, and so old?

loved loved loved. even writing this review feels weirdly meta and ironic after finishing it. i hate june hayward and the entire time i was hoping she got what was coming to her, yet felt so badly when it did. the way kuang was able to create such a detestable set of characters while still making them whole, vivid, and tangible will keep my head rolling for WEEKS.

there are certain things about this book that i really loved. i think sarah rose has an amazing ability to say something punching, vivid, and visceral. for me, this book lacked the umph i wanted from it. i struggled with the Believers aspect, it felt too "oh i'm so different", which, coming from a white main character, i immediately got my year of rest and relaxation vibes. is it the same? no. was i reading it almost as though it was satire? probably yes. i will say i liked the ending, it gives you what you want. i guess? maybe i'll reread? maybe i won't???
