I really was excited by the set up of this (gothic, vampirism, sapphic-coded) but just felt bogged down by classic vernacular and a LOT of passive narration as opposed to anything of substance? At only a couple of hundred pages I should've flown through this but alas.

overall it was okay!! I lost concentration on occasion and spotted far too many grammatical/spelling mistakes which the editor could've caught so easily which really threw me for a loop but mostly this is a good harmless story that I'm glad I read because (having not read any marvel comics) I was happy to get some insight into Nat's background and the Red Room!!

A fascinating, unapologetic, oftentimes brutal look into the reality of racism in a particularly British context. Whilst there's obviously the odd point that sits uncomfortably with me as a white woman and the heaviness of the content made it difficult to get through on occasion, I think I recognise that I at least have the privilege of taking a break from reading the book; the majority of black people suffering any form or manifestation of racism can't afford that same privilege of putting it down whenever it gets too much which I think in itself resonated really powerfully with me.

for all its cons (too many characters and names to try and keep up with, too much jumping back and forth in time and place and subject, too quick of an ending) I was still squealing like a teenager !! I'm just obsessed with jeri soberanis and I think they deserve an entire book to themselves thanks (also how incredible to have an explicitly canon, non-binary, pansexual, black character with a beautiful cultural context?? wowie)
