Hearing all about peregrine falcons and their lifetimes wasn't doing it for me.
I... loved this book. And not for the story. No, the story was irrelevant. But the ideas presented, just the thought of a society like the one they live in where "Everyone belongs to everyone" and sexual promiscuity and drugs to escape unhappiness or stress is the norm, makes me appreciate our world even more, even with its flaws.
And there's something to be said to have not only a right to happiness, but a right to unhappiness. A right for struggle, because in struggle we find hope. Without it, what do we have except a never-ending plateau of contentment? I think that's wrong.

Very very good. Strout has a unique way of writing where she draws you in by implying something big, and then leading up to the reader figuring out this big thing on their own through details and characters' conversations. For instance, instead of "He died" it would be "His wife certainly was pretty... she looked forlornly beautiful sitting in the front row pew, draped in black, mourning a lost future." etc etc. No, that was not actually in the book, I just needed to come up with an example. But yes it was good and I was thinking no way in hell this book would have a happy ending but it pulled itself together well. Tears are guaranteed if you have a soul.
I don't know if these are as good as I remember them but I am determined to string together all of the Beatrice clues this time around. Just for good measure.
I love these books... but yes the earlier ones lack some of the depth that is admirable in the later ones. can't wait to get there.
I can't handle these books. Maybe it's because the dead girl is named Alison, spelled the same way as mine... but seriously. These books. I know they're teen books, whatever, but they do creep me out at night.
