On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

“I am thinking of beauty again, how some things are hunted because we have deemed them beautiful. If, relative to the history of our planet, and individual life is so short, a blink of an eye, as they say, then to be gorgeous, even from the day you’re born to the day you die, is to be gorgeous only briefly.”

“Ma, I don’t know if you’ve made it this far in this letter - or if you’ve made it here at all. You always tell me it’s too late for you to read, with your poor liver, your exhausted bones, that after everything you’ve been through, you’d just like to rest now. That reading is a privilege you made possible for me with what you lost. I know you believe in reincarnation. I don’t know if I do but I hope it’s real. Because then maybe you’ll come back here next time around. Maybe you’ll be a girl and maybe your name will be Rose again, and you’ll have a room full of books with parents who will read you bedtime stories in a country not touched by war. Maybe then, in that life and in this future, you’ll find this book and you’ll know what happened to us. And you’ll remember me. Maybe.”

this was the most well written book i’ve ever read in my entire life and i’m sad i took so much time to read it but life just got a bit busy. Would like to read it again to fully experience it

i don’t really understand the point of this book tbh it didn’t work for me in the class critical thing people say it does.
it seems confusing and the author doesn’t really know what some of the terms she uses mean.

Was not satisfied with anything in this book. The only thing i liked was how ava thought about some things because i felt like i could relate to some of them in terms of her relationships and her being a bi woman. Other than that it was a boring ass book.

i didn’t really connect with anyone. Don’t care about edith and ava’s relationship (i kinda care about ava and julian’s friendship at the end). Overall things just seem very superficial.

Someone pointed out how the book has some racist undertones and i can see it: just a bunch of ole white people in an asian country for no reason, being condescending about locals and, at times, disrespectful.

i have a bone to pick with this one
o final i saw it coming it didn’t blow me away at all
and overall we get it honey you’re a pretty little princess and you’ve never struggled with money WE GET IT
