I hated it. I read this because my friend made me (because it was bad and she wanted to talk about the end with me)
There wasn’t any actual smut until 52% in, for starters, and I definitely wasn’t supposed to find it as funny as I did.
I highlighted and annotated the whole book as I was reading and all 400+ notes are visible on my Goodreads so if you want to see my decent into madness real time I’ve been told it’s entertaining.
I will not be reading the second book of this duology.

I wanted to like this book more, I mean, fruity A Knights Tale? What wouldn’t be to love? But I’m realizing Lex Croucher might not be for me as an author.

This is my second Lex Croucher book (the first being Infamous) and in both works I was disappointed by the lack of trigger warnings for more upsetting content that was in no way hinted at in the marketing of either book. I also liked the side characters way more than the main characters. I will say I liked this book more than Infamous, but I struggled to stay motivated to finish the book in a timely manner.

That being said, I wouldn’t dissuade anyone from reading this book as there were very cute moments and entertaining banter/shenanigans, however bare in mind the following trigger warnings: parental verbal/physical abuse, graphic depictions of violence/gore/war of a medieval type setting, blood,  and homophobia.

Holy grail of plot twists and a wonderful marriage between the genres historical fiction and mystery suspense.

Fortune telling, family secrets, unreliable narrators, romance, danger, and expertly plotted prose, I loved everything about this novel. I typically pride myself on being fairly good at discerning where a plot is leading and how a book is going to end but I was wonderfully surprised all the way to the finish!

Red, our main character, is reminiscent of an Enola Holmes archetype with her quick wit and schemes that land her in more than one precarious situation. Even in her moments of lapsed judgment, you can’t help but root for her.

This is definitely going on the shelf as “books I could read for the first time again.” And I’ll definitely be reading again to catch any details and hints I may have missed the first time around!

Did not finish book. Stopped at 23%.
Unfortunately the ARC I had via Edelweiss as a bookseller expired and I didn’t want to read ahead. I’ll have to buy the physical copy and start over, which, I wanted to do that anyway so it works out.
