FINALLY found a thriller that blew my mind

I was not expecting to love this but it surprised me in the best way possible.

the book focuses on sexual assault but doesn't go into it with the nuance it needs

pros

- the assholes got what they deserved
- showing how women can also be complicit (however they never go in depth about it)

cons

- every straight guy being the spawn of satan
- the ending being a little too perfect
- the twist was predictable, the author left too many clues for me at least
- it really wasn't thrilling

overall this book wasn't bad just meh, watch promising young woman instead

this was a fun read but i guess i can't give it a higher rating because the ending was a little too happy for my taste - also a girl was brutally murdered and yet she wasn't given the proper respect just because she was a troubled person (i mean she's awful but still...)

this was well crafted, everything fell in place perfectly by the end and i am so happy it didn't try to be a gone girl knock off

min jin lee crafts a gripping story during the backdrop of korea being colononized by japan and how it impacts multiple generations of a poor korean family

pros

- the beautiful writing, i could feel myself being there - loved the way she would describe the food
- the female characters were wonderful
- educational on korean history
- i'm not korean but i feel it's important for many who's families had to endure all of this
- baek isak yep fuck koh hansu, he is what a real man should be

cons

- all the unnecessary sex that added nothing to the story - like i didn't need pages about an irrelevant character's sex life
- the way we quickly move on from a character's death
- solomon's story being boring asf
- i wish we focused more on hoonie, he sounded amazing

Overall i am glad this book was written even if it didn't end up being absolute fave.I loved learning more about what koreans had to deal with and how it impacted multiple generations, excited to watch the show

oof this book

i went into this loving it and ended up feeling so fucking bitter

taking a concept so interesting and executing this badly must be a talent like i'm so mad

things i hated

- jules, olivia, will, jonah were so insufferable hated reading about them
- it takes literally FOREVER for the actual murder to happen
- a huge plot hole with Aoife which i won't spoil but didn't make sense, this is why the whole multiple povs thing falls flat on it's face because how the fuck wasn't she thinking abt something like that
- cliched character arcs especially jules like i know this stuff happens alot but it was done so half heartedly
- the shitty filler chapters that takes place on the wedding day when the murder happens - like it hardly progresses the plot at all
- one character self harms and it's hardly ever discussed
- such a messy conclusion, without hardly any closure
- the book would've worked if it took place after the person got murdered and we were trying to figure out who - the povs thing killed the fun
- many plot points don't get proper closure
- the book abruptly ends
- will's stupid fucking friends, they were so annoying to hear them yell about finding a body

tolerable things

- kind of interesting at first
- i liked hannah and Aoife
- it was short

ugh... tempted to give a 1 star cause how i'm angry at it but it did some things right so it sits at 1.5 for now.
