Nothing But Blackened Teeth by Cassandra Khaw

2.5

It was okay, I liked it a lot more than "salt grows heavy" by this author, the vocabulary wasn't as wordy and much easier to digest.

There was a lot more drama between the characters rather than the haunting/horror of the house. I wish there was more focus on the house, the ghost bride and all the other mythical monsters rather than petty drama and arguments lol.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 54%.
DNFing at 54% - but skipping to the last couple chapters to see the twists.
Saw some twists coming not the final one tho, might have finished the book if under 300 pages. Too slow paced. Too repetitive. Fans of Colleen Hoover or ba Paris might enjoy this book. Not enough pay off to make this a satisfying read. Glad I dnfed.
Your Mind Is a Terrible Thing by Hailey Piper

I would like to start by saying I love Hailey Piper, I've read two books previously and they were fantastic.. this one on the other hand.. not so much.

It was very difficult to follow along and know what was happening, I have aphantasia so that may be why but I was confused a lot of the time with the setting, I couldn't picture the layout of the ship and just wasn't able to make much connections between the setting, the plot, and the characters.

I also felt it was slightly hard to read. Almost felt like i was doing research/homework with all the locations throughout the spaceship. between Pod Q and P, Pod P and O, and so on and on and on. It was just so tiring.

Read this if you enjoy: Horror, scifi, cyberpunk, lgbtqia+, space, novellas, weird fiction, space stations.

Unfortunately, this one was just not for me.

This book gave me a lot of feelings, and I don't have the words to describe them.

challenging dark mysterious sad fast-paced

Short novella,96 pages told in diary entries of a 63 year old woman named Laverne. She lives in a small town where the rain doesn't stop and causes memory loss, every drop washes away a memory until you have lost yourself entirely.

This was so bizzare and unsettling, I read it in one sitting. It's a little bit ambiguous so you don't get all the answers you might want but damn the vibes were perfect.

Read this if you enjoy: isolation, small towns, dystopian, environmental horror/sci-fi, unreliable narrators, journal-style writing.

adventurous dark mysterious tense

5.0

Wow! I loved this book so much.
Inspired by Dyatlov Pass Incident. Creepy forest/survival horror with a supernatural twist.
This had some really great gore and detailed body horror. This has multiple timelines, but they were in short chapters and easy to follow. Also, multiple POVs that I really enjoyed following the story from different characters.

I wish we got to learn more about the earth, I found this to be really intresting but like with Dyatlovs Pass incident you're also left wondering what really happened and i think that really works for this book.

I feel like this could have a follow-up book #2? At least, that's what I'm hoping.

Read this if you like: multiple POV, multiple timelines, creepy forests/wilderness, survival, supernatural, short chapters, gore and body horror, unsettling books, and books that make you go "wtf just happened?"

Thank you to Netgalley for sharing a digital copy to read and to Quirk books for sending me a paperback arc. As always, opinions are my own.

Edit: the author let me know the note message was revealed, I just missed it. It's in chapter 22. Updating my rating to 5 stars.

Although the plot was pretty common and you saw the reveal coming, this book had my anxiety through the roof and my stomach in knots. Not many books give me such a visceral feeling. I absolutely loved this book.

Would have been a 5 star read but I'm disappointed that the message of the note to Juno from her sister wasn't revealed.

Read this if you enjoy horror, thrillers, isolation, islands, domestic horror, dysfunctional families, remote settings.
