A Pale View of Hills by Kazuo Ishiguro

Even though 'A Pale View of Hills' is slight, and it's subject matter might appear fairly normal, Ishiguro manages to pack an absurd amount of tension into the most apparently-mundane occurrences. As it goes on the reader becomes aware of a dark undercurrent that runs through every one of the characters. At times this makes the book difficult, especially if, like me, you're predisposed to like characters and want the best for them. There's also a large amount of ambiguity, which I think some people had problems with. I wasn't one of those people. Ambiguity works perfectly with Ishiguro's (lovely) sparse prose and repetition of dialogue. And given the hidden darkness in this story, I think the unanswered questions may be preferable to the answers.
