Tbh I bought this book cause of the cover, the fact that it was one of the very few English books they had in the French bookstore I was in, and (of course) because it was by Lana del Rey.

I went into this collection blind.
I expected it to be quite agressive - “I’m youre jazz singer, you’re my cult leader”, “He hit me and it felt like a kiss”, “I got you’re bible and your gun.” And it really, mostly, wasn’t.

This book was very up and down for me
It’s important for me to clarify that I really think some of the poems are really great and emotional, and that’s the main reason for the four stars.
I also really love Lana Del Rey’s writing as it just has such style and power to it. She is really great at making an interesting buildup and vibe. This book did evoke some emotions in me, especially when it talked about control and the loss of it.

In the start I really enjoyed the flow - the poems had a punch and a rhythm, that really made it enjoyable to read.
But I really think it lost that towards the end. It became less and less flowy and ended up a bit clunky i think.

I also think that some of the poems could have been either shorter or cut, as it was repetitive at times - most of it was “I have to move on but  my past haunts me and who am I even without love?”.

But it was just simply too vague for me. It didn’t really point out a certain topic and focused on that, but felt very much like a stream of consciousness to me. That’s probably my main critique - it SO needed a focus - because while it was repetitive it was so unclear.
I would love to learn more about specific emotions that came up and instead of vague, poetic like flashbacks over her past, I wanted it to be much more detailed.

But the cover is really nice tho:)
