too "happy" for my taste

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a tale of youth, of beauty, of obsession. It's about art, influence, vanity, material indulgence, hedonism & decadence. Its main idea is "art for the sake of art." It is a Gothic fiction.

3.25⭐

Dream State by Martin Ott is not just a story. It is a circumstance, a condition, a situation, a state or a feeling one can be in. It's like being in a pool of consciousness, it's like that feeling of sand slipping through your fingers, like walking through clouds, like being in a dream. (It might not be making sense & I know that, but that's exactly how reading the pages of this book feels like). The title of the book perfectly reflects the "aura" of the book.

3.5⭐

⚓The Perils of Sea and Sky by Lilian Horn is the first book of "Tales from the Red Queen". It is a fantasy/scifi that follows the journey of a ship, the Red Queen, & its crew into an unimaginable adventure across the Grey Veil. There are flying ships, pirates, monsters, trolls & creatures that aren't very friendly.

⚓The book has a strong female protagonist that goes by the name, Captain Drackenheart. She's a brilliant leader who doesn't waver in the face of adversity. She manages her crew & her ship incredibly. I loved her control over herself before anyone else.

⚓It's a fast paced book which is easy & fun to read. The world building isn't too complex. The adventure was really good. By the end you feel your heart beating in your head! I was kinda hooked

2.5⭐

To kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee is about a small town in South, where everybody knows everybody. It's the 1930s & you see it from the eyes of a pair of siblings. I liked the town, the town people, their gossips but it was not what I was expecting.

I was expecting it to be a heavy heart wrenching read which leaves you in utmost despair but it was soft & mellow, it left you melancholy but not in despair. It was warm & cozy and that's what it shouldn't have been. It's about a black man accused of rape of a white girl. It should've been gut wrenching.

In my humble opinion, it's a solid 2.5 star. Narration by a kid on such a heavy topic was, in my opinion, a pretty bad move. Third person narrative would've been better, it would've been more rich in detail & better engaging.

The book became insanely popular perhaps because it was published at the time of the civil rights movement & perhaps everybody saw it as a positive influence. Now, here's the thing, I understand the book's importance, its impact, its need at that time which is perhaps immense but if we, for a moment, just think of it as a random fiction book, read for pleasure or even for education, it's not as powerful as it could've been. It gives the idea of what it was like in the South during the 30s but it doesn't leave a lasting impact (on a brown Asian, if you know what I mean).

It's a totally white narrative, a book written by a white woman from her point of view, from her understanding of her surroundings. How can a white person ever know or feel what it was like to live the life of a black person & then truly understand the situation of a black man accused of rape of a white girl. Here's another thing too. This book is so bland & so single perspectiv-ed that you don't get to see much done or said by the black people themselves. They're like in the background somewhere & they don't seem to be doing anything for their own selves. This book completely overlooks the efforts of the black people which they, in reality, put for their cause. There's just a kind hearted white dude being a hero & trying to save the day...I mean I don't have a problem with that but at least give the black people their due credit too.

Overall, it's a nice book but nothing great.
