“He was bold too, now that he had taken his helmet off.
—Joey The Lips Fagan, he said.
—Eh ———Come again?
—Joey The Lips Fagan.
—An’ I’m Jimmy The Bollix Rabbitte.
—I’ve earned my name for my horn playing, Brother Rabbitte. How did you earn yours?
Jimmy pointed a finger at him.
—Don’t get snotty with me, son.”
A master of dialogue, Roddy Doyle wonderfully sketches his characters through their interactions in the page.

The narrative unfolds through unparalleled dialogue and holds so much truth.
My favourite Roddy Doyle.
My favourite Roddy Doyle.
I loved this book and the recent film adaptation for very different reasons. In both versions, the sense of isolation and anonymity in an otherwise hectic world becomes palpable, and what should seem creepy somehow does not. The book stands out with a meticulously told story, connecting the protagonist back to an alien world, whereas the film lands a slow burn with a voluptuous ending to Frankie's The Power of Love. Very powerful and moving indeed, a story that stays with you for a long time.
