I just finished reading this aloud with a group of fifth and sixth graders. While I enjoyed the book and the relationship between the two characters, I thought it was a bit rushed. I don't feel like I had time to connect with the characters before the ending of the story. The students, on the other hand - really enjoyed the book and identified perfectly well with the story.
I do think that there are beautiful passages about friendship and loss and that the ending of the book is absolutely perfect. It is definately a book that young people will enjoy and that can open discussions that may help introduce difficult topics.

Incredible characters that you love and some that you love to hate! Ken Follett has created a masterpiece of passion and history. When I was reading this book, I felt so close to the characters that I desperately skimmed ahead to make sure that nothing horrible was going to happen to them in the next chapters. I rarely read a novel where I completely fall in love with the world that it creates - sure, there have been a few: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, The Cider House Rules...and Pillars of the Earth ranks right up there.
Definately a recommended read and one that will be joining my shelf of absolute favorites!

Highly recommended, Conroy's The Prince of Tides is part psychological investigation, part Southern gothic horror-show and part family drama. I had been meaning to read this novel for years, and when it became available on the Kindle I decided to go for it. It wasn't the masterpiece that I expected - but it was well-written and has left definate images seared into my imagination. On the whole, I was surprised by the graphic nature of the abuse and cruelty in the book. I know that Conroy himself was subjected to abuse at the hands of his father and based the father in the novel on his own...and I suppose the book exorcised some demons for the author.
All in all, I'm glad that I read the book, but I was certainly not itching to run out and pick up another Conroy novel.
