Some parts of this book were really great. But a lot of it ended up being more teen drama than demonic Carrie possession vibes (which is more what I was expecting from the cover).
The 80s exorcism scene was great at the end. But they KILLED THE DOG which basically ruins everything always. And I really felt bad for Abby the whole time- she really gets no payoff.
I think I wanted this to have more Scooby Doo Stranger Things vibes where a group of teens could rely on each other even if the adults in the town didn’t believe in possession. And while well- written, this book wasn’t like that at all.

DAMN. Took me a minute to get back into this universe because it’s got SO much going on. But wow what an installment.
I’m tired of these kids being SO ostracized from their magic communities because they’re different. Between Amari, Tristan Strong, and Morrigan Crow my patience is at an all time low. Seems to me that the Bureau, Magicians, UnWanteds, and everyone else involved in this mess got what they wanted by the end of it- an all out war.
I’m worried for Amari and her supporters. But I’m more worried that I have to wait for the next book to come out.

SUCH a sweet read. Parts of it didn’t feel fully fleshed out but I am half in love with Talia Avramov myself. Plus the ambience of Thistle Grove is pure fall enough that I’d love to visit.
3.5⭐️ I’m ANNIHILATING witchy books today. I enjoyed this one more than the last- it felt like more of a whimsical comfort read than anything. It reminded me a lot of House in the Cerulean Sea but without controversy yikes.
I wasn’t particularly in the mood to read about a straight couple today but they were very sweet and the supporting cast was extra charming.

4.5⭐️ So surprisingly wholesome. I saw a lot of people comparing this narrator to Mark Watney and there are definite similarities. The majority of the book is science stuff which was easy enough to follow and made me feel very smart.
I love Rocky. I’m happy with the ending. I was expecting to cry but didn’t which I call a win.
One drawback: even though the stakes of this book are IMPOSSIBLY high (all life on two planets high) the text is pretty bland. The stress levels don’t feel heightened and so as a reader I did not feel emotionally connected. I don’t think I would’ve cried even if the opportunity arose because I wasn’t absorbed enough.

I was a kid who grew up with Percy Jackson and the Hunger Games. This is the first book that has somehow managed to transform those stories and that energy into something new and exciting. Not only that, but it is less white, less cis, and less het than it’s predecessors (which are all HUGE pros in my book).
I eagerly await the sequel!!

I really need to stop reading Grady Hendrix books. They’re quick reads but I really don’t enjoy them as much as other people seem to. To start, why does this man write about casts of characters that are almost entirely women? For a book like this one that talks about the pornographic violence of slasher films and how fans (men in particular) consume this kind of content in unhealthy ways, this book seems oddly like he is a man profiting off of violence against women.
Maybe it’s not that deep. Maybe it is. But I couldn’t shake a feeling the whole time reading this book that I was being packaged and sold something in-genuine. People talk about his writing as satirical and witty but I barely found it readable.

I love the Shady Hollow universe. They’re always relaxing, fun, and easy reads for me. I’m bummed there aren’t more installments out yet, but maybe I’ll have to find a way to read the holiday e-book!
