My opinion may be skewed because I have not read Carrie or seen the film, but I enjoyed this a lot! TDJ is such a great storyteller. She is that girl! Because the way this book had me in a chokehold, I could not put it down. I'm usually not mad at the untidy ending, but a nice little epilogue from the pov of Maddy or Kenny would have been nice.

I didn't anticipate all the twists and turns this book took. Yejide went through it! I am still processing Yejide and Akin's tumultuous relationship in relation to Nigeria's political turmoil within the period in which the book is based. This a definitely a page-turner for me!

I have enjoyed reading Shae Sanders works. This one wasn't my favorite. I didn't care for Savannah or Taurus. Baby, Savannah was trying to hunt for another husband before the ink could dry on the divorce papers.

I wanted to love this, but I finished the book feeling "ok". The new friend group that Quinn built was the most endearing part of the book for me. I wasn't fully invested in the missing journal plotline, though it was the driving plot of the book. Also once the situation with the journal is sorted out the ending of the book kind of falls apart for me. It was still a cute read.

Beautiful is the only word I think of for this book. It hit a little harder for me just because of the headspace in which I was reading this book. It really spoke to the feeling of falling and being in love in such a poetic way from a black lens that I was eating up.
