Universal Harvester by John Darnielle
3.0
3.5 stars (why are there no half stars!?)
I thoroughly enjoyed this read—smooth and descriptive, it conjured images I could easily relate to given my own upbringing in the rural farmlands of the midwest.
The prose leads you to some unexpected places—where I had expected horror I found grief, where I expected the concrete answers of a novel, I found the simple and vague responses of real life. I found myself wanting a tidier package at the end. Perhaps it's to the novel's credit that it did not offer one up.

Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders

This book broke traditional narrative structure in a wholly effective way—it is barely noticeable, and most enjoyable. Saunders has done a beautiful job in the writing of this book.
