This is a story about Tessa Grey and how she learns the truth about herself and the shadow world. She arrives to England after a letter she got from her brother and gets kidnapped and forced to learn to use her gift. She always wears a clockwork angel necklace that belonged to her mother and like Clary in The Mortal Instruments she always thought that she was ordinary human. Tessa is a great main character. She's kind and doesn't lash out people when they hurt her, unless you're Will Herondale.
Will Herondale is such an amazing character. I usually hate characters that are hot and cold but how could I ever dislike him? I love how we already got to see inside him a little bit like how Jem knew about twelve year old Will coming to institute. He just keeps so much inside him and I can't blame people for not liking him in this book. I love that Will was the one that saved her and that they have their love for books in common.
But then there's Jem who is nice and helpful. When I say that this series is the only love triangle that I enjoy-- I also mean it. I might like Will a bit more than Jem but they're both so amazing that you might ship Tessa with Will but then Jem says something and then you like Tessa with him and the circle goes on and on. Even though I prefer Will and Tessa, at least Jem has always been nice and honest with her. He liked the feeling he got when she worried about her and I think that already means that he's falling for her.
Jem and Will's relationship is just so wonderful that it doesn't even matter if you're team Will or Jem. Will doesn't care about a lot of people but he does care about Jem. He'd be ready to do anything for him. Jem loves Will like a brother but I love the fact that he doesn't make excuses for his behavior even if he understands him better than anyone.
I don't really like Jessamine. She's pretty shallow but she did have her moments. She could be a good shadowhunter if she didn't refused and she was funny at times, like when Tessa showed her powers and instead of getting upset, she was more worried about how her nose looked like. I think I could deal with her being shallow if she wasn't mean towards people who didn't deserve it, like Henry.
Henry is such a sweetheart and I feel like he needs to be protected. He just wants to invent things and clearly loves Charlotte very much. He also cares about "the kids" and I felt so bad when he said that Charlotte couldn't count on him to be sensible. He knows he lacks on some things but he's such a nice guy.
We don't really know enough about Sophie for me to really have an opinion of her but I know she was trying to protect Tessa by telling her not to give her heart away to Will. I also love that instead of being mad about what happened to her face-- part of her was glad. Whoever loved her now would love her true self, and not her pretty face.
The Magister was so smart and so dumb at the same time. He did all this planning and all his plans went away simply because he assumed that Tessa would just do whatever he told her to. The guy wanted to marry her but arranged her to be treated like a prisoner and a slave instead of making her want to do what he wanted. Like I said-- dumb.
I'm so glad that I decided to re-read Clockwork Angel. I remembered some stuff but like I had no idea who Thomas was in the beginning of the book (from some reason at some points I thought he was one of the Lightwood brothers). The love triangle was so good you can't help but root for both.
