The Scent Keeper
I was hesitant to read this book because I saw mixed reviews. I went in with low expectations but was blown out of the water. I loved it.
Emmeline grew up on a secluded island with her dad telling her stories of mermaids and fairytales. Her father was always working on his scent paper and teaching Emmeline to smell the difference between cedar and amber, jasmine and lily. When his scent papers begin to fade, the world Emmeline thought that she knew, no longer exists. This is a story of a little girl leaning that fairytales aren't real. Her birthday isn't marked by the smell on the first day of spring, mermaids don't exist, and she may have a mother after all.
I love the intricate details of this book that were woven together from beginning to end. I love how the talent of identifying scents came to help both Emmeline and Fisher later on in life. I also loved how she learned life lessons from the tales her dad told her about as a child. Wonderfully crafted!

I devoured this book in two days! Told between multiple authors and years, there is a lot of information and clues to put together. I enjoyed the unlikeable characters (which is unusual for me) and I loved the unreliable memories. I also love how Macmillan brought the story full circle. History always repeats itself ✨

Jo returns back to her childhood estate with her 10 year old daughter. While to some, that would be fond memories, all Jo can remember is how her mother wanted nothing to do with her growing up and how her sweet nanny was the only person who loved her... that is... until she disappeared. Now Jo is living with her estranged mother when they find a skull in the lake behind the home. Who does it belong to? Does her mother know more than she’s letting on?
