I loved Nesta but not everyone will. Personally, I see myself in Nesta and understand her character on a deep level. It can be hard to like her especially in the beginning because she is unlikable and the reason why I like her character is because I have been in her shoes. There were times where I wanted to yell at her for sure but I understand her. I am like Nesta and Nesta is like me and loving Nestas character makes me hopeful that I can love myself too. Also the smut scenes in this book are superior to the prior books in the series.

I enjoy this story and find that the plot twists are not all predictable. This series is perfect for middle school eyes who are wanting to advance their skills. With that being said, as a 21 y/o I am enjoying the story so while this is perfect for adolescent readers, it’s not too juvenile for young adults. There is some vocabulary that is complex however most of them are discernible using context clues. I think this series would be an excellent replacement for classic dystopian books because the grammar is “modern” and I think is much more interesting, thought provoking, and easy to follow compared to the classics. I also think that the main message of the story is very obvious and pertinent to everyone. If you are someone wanting to intentionally diversify your reading this is a good choice. The author is a POC and also writes different cultures into the story.

This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. It’s a slow paced book written as a short story. There’s virtually no character development and the characters are unlikable. There is so little explanation about the world in the book that at times the reader may become confused. The author tries to be poetic and metaphorical but it comes off a nonsensical, boring, and confusing. The plot idea is fantastic which is why it’s such a well known book. However it is poorly executed and therefore disappointing. I love dystopian books but every time I read one as short as this I thoroughly disappointed. If you are like me and want to read this because of its cultural significance, I would still encourage you to do so, it’s actually why I read it. Read it. Form your own opinion on it. It’s okay if you’re opinion is that it sucks and it’s okay if it’s that it’s awesome.
