I definitely enjoyed the first book more but that’s usually how sequels go. There were several points in the book that felt like the author was directly addressing fan theories and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I’m very interested to see where this series goes in the next books especially given the way this one ended.

A fun quick read especially if you’re looking for witchy reads for around Halloween but I thought the first book in the series was better.

Just as cute as the first book in the series with all the cozy witchy vibes to. I loved the addition of the witch college students and would love to learn more about the witch college in the next book. I enjoyed the romance in the kiss curse tho I thought their rivalry didn’t exactly last long enough and they were clearly in love with each other very early in the story. It was a very predictable book tho rom coms usually are and it was still a very fun lighthearted read, perfect for October.

There is something about Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books that work so well as audiobooks and this is no exception.
I loved the family dynamic in Malibu Rising and all the different POVs. It really gives some perspective on celebrity and how people you see that are rich and famous and seemingly have it all together could have a very different story in reality.
I also love that many of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books are in the same universe so characters from other books are regularly mentioned which is just a fun tid bit for those who have read her books.

Took a little while to get into and the switching POV which being marked was somewhat confusing at time but once you get into it it’s great! It was super interesting to read a book that delves into Slavic folklore as I hadn’t read much about it before.  I loved the strong female characters in the book and that they essentially needed to outsmart men. I am also always a sucker for a book with a parallel magical world so I automatically liked that bit. It was also really nice to listen to as an audiobook and I would definitely recommend it in that form!

Really enjoyed the world and the world building but it was kind of hard to understand at times and the magic system is fairly mysterious the whole book. I also had a hard time following the names of people and races but that may be due to listening to the audiobook and many of the terms sound similar tho I’m sure on paper are easier to distinguish. But I am glad I listened to it since it is quite long and I could speed it up.
I really like that this book was massed in middle eastern culture and folklore which was really interesting since I have not had much exposure to those cultures.
Overall a very interesting book and the way it ended makes me want to read the next one in the series immediately.

The perfect cozy low stakes witchy read. My only complaint this that there isn’t more of it!
