we all know why i read this book. bc of mr. bigolas dickolas wolfwood (@maskofbun on twitter). it was good. i did not understand a good chunk of it, i was trying to understand the time travel aspect and then tik tok and twitter told me not to. to just read the book and ✨vibe✨ and i liked it a lot more that way. i enjoyed the second half a lot more (i guess bc it wasn’t repetitive) and i liked the twist. cool scifi romance. also it gives doctor who vibes.

content warning: racism, colorism, murder, sexism

i picked it up bc it had very similar themes to the legendborn series by tracy deonn. i really liked it

it’s not exactly the same (it’s not set in america, the magic system is more soft etc.) but the themes and how they portrayed generational trauma and anger with magic is the same.

black girls who are allowed to be angry and wild and full of rage. ikenna amari you have my heart

her relationship with reed? felt underdeveloped to the point where it didn’t feel necessary to include (and im saying this even after i read the second book)

representation: both main characters are first gen bi armenian women 🇦🇲🩷💜💙

content warning: biphobia, queer phobia in general, talks of genocide specifically the armenian genocide, racism, sexism

very cute very soft a good cozy read. if you’re first gen you’ll be like “yeah moms and aunties are like that”

it is an adult romance but it’s a closed door romance so sorry sapphics who were looking for spicy scenes

i feel like if you enjoyed “the girls ive been” by tess sharpe you’d enjoy this. and if you liked this maybe you should read the other book. both great. both had me screaming crying and throwing up.

i couldn’t figure out the twists (again brain off when reading) so that was fun.

i’m glad oliver dies bc he was annoying. id like to believe that red and author met up afterwards

ikenna did everything wrong and i stand by her. i support her. yes she beats people up / murders them but let’s take a second to think about what they did to deserve it ?!?! and even if they didn’t that’s ikenna so she’s automatically right.

i enjoyed the book but i feel like there was a lot of plot that needed to happen and not enough space to fully develop it. it kinda hurt :/ things that i was really looking forward to seeing like
ikenna killing the blood emperor
and
ikenna killing the tribunal and remaking the government
felt very anti climactic given all the build up.

it was still a really good book obvi i loved the cast of characters etc but yeah.
